Description ccampeanu 2014-03-05 05:03:13 UTC
Panel icons are too big and they expand horizontally taking too much useful space.
They should be resizable by user and systemsettings should allow reordering them on rows(as it is for tasks-- similar to task manager).
Groupping similar tasks should be optional for user. Importing profile from older versions works, but creating a new one does not work. Backward compatibility is only partially preserved (in terms of the way things are displayed on the screen).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Resize pannel
2.Icons exapand
3.no way to reduce their size;
Actual Results:
Icons are too big! We cannot add applications to the panel. It's either adding to desktop or dig into the menu.

Expected Results:
Icons should be resizable by user to match the screen size and resolution desired by user.
The user should have the decision of the size, not the system/programmer.

In an older version this bug was present, then was fixed in a later one, but now is back again.
Changing the icon size in the menu has no effect. I think that last time I had to edit a config file, then it worked from the system settings but now the structure seems to be changed -- too complex to dig in.

In general adding some feature should not destroy old functionality, unfortunatelly programmers often forget or ignore this basic courtesy rule.

Can you please state which icons in the panel you are referring to? Task manager, quick launcher, or system tray?

ExampleKDE-4.11.4.png

Hi Christoph,

The icons I am referring to are for the quick launcher.
I am attaching few screen captures. In Mageia4 although,
in theory, the size can be changed, the icons will
be scaled to occupy the whole space.
In 4.4.5(mandriva) their size is ok, although they cannot be scaled down. In 4.6.5(mageia1/2) I could scaled them, but
not put them on rows as we do with task manager icons, still ok.
In 4.11.4, they scale automatically and they will occupy more than 50 of the with of the screen, as compared to 4.6 where they take less than 30% of the total bar with. If I increase the height of the panel bar,
the icons scale up and their with increases even more.
I hope you can get a fix for this undesirable behaviour.
Thanks,
CC

Thanks for the update, I have reassigned the bug to the right component.

Hello!

This bug report was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this bug is already resolved in Plasma 5.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this bug report. If the issue described here is still present in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!

Nate Graham
