Description Patrick Thomas 2014-02-28 22:42:22 UTC
Application: plasma-desktop (4.12.2)
KDE Platform Version: 4.12.2
Qt Version: 4.8.6
Operating System: Linux 3.11.0-12-generic x86_64
Distribution: Linux Mint 16 Petra

-- Information about the crash:
- What happened last session:
I was having internet issues, so I dug around.
*Modified /etc/network/interfaces
*Modified /etc/resolv.conf
*Ran "service wicd restart"
*Ran "service networking restart"
---- Plasma Desktop Crashed here, but did not produce a "good" backtrace as the only thing it produced was "Segmentation Fault 11" or something like that. Just one line. And yes I have ALL debugging symbols for my installed packages installed. ----
*Pinged google.com
*Ran "host google.com"
*Ran "dig google.com"
Internet was working now, but Plasma Desktop wasn't able to start as it was giving the exact same message as before everytime I tried to restart it. So I used tty1 logged in as root to restart KDM.
- What I was doing when the application crashed:
Logging in
- Unusual behavior I noticed:
An error popped up after logging in via KDM saying something about a file not existing.
After clicking ok on that error box, it showed my KDM splash, and after that I got the Plasma Desktop Shell has crash dialog. However, as you can see, it produced a worthy enough backtrace to be sent in.
- System:
OS: Linux Mint Petra (16) KDE Edition
Arch: amd64
Ram: 4GB Physical, 7.45GB Swap
Processor: AMD Phenom 9750 Quad-Core 2.4GHz
Storage: 160GB SATA HDD
KDE: 4.12.2 (upgraded via Kubuntu PPA)

The crash can be reproduced every time.

-- Backtrace:
Application: Plasma Desktop Shell (plasma-desktop), signal: Segmentation fault

Try wicd 0.3.1

It has nothing to do with Wicd, I changed over to network-manager and it still happened. Nor does it have to do with KWallet/KMail as I don't have KMail installed and KWallet doesn't start on boot. I'm a bit skeptical on the panel resize one as I didn't resize any panel nor did I get a chance to, but maybe it tried to "resize" to the right size... IDK. I rebooted and it was working fine, except internet was broke again. I restarted "networking" and it crashed again so I tried running plasma-desktop and it crashed before I even saw anything difference. Restarted kdm again, but this time the missing file thing didn't happen so that's good... but plasma-desktop was still broke... For now I am going to have to use DHCP, as using dhclient seems to work without problems. I hate DHCP. So whatever the problem is, it is related to the "networing" service.

It does. Look at the backtrace. It wouldn't lie.

Either upgrade wicd-kde to 0.3.1, or ensure the wicd daemon is already started before logining into the desktop.

Then why is it that it did the *exact* same thing when I had *uninstalled* Wicd and installed network manager (although that one didn't produce a backtrace)?

Because the widget is called *wicd-kde* not *networkmanager-kde*, so it needs (a running) wicd daemon but not networkmanager daemon. Is that clear enough ?

And please stop reopening the bug just because you have questions. Just ask, I will answer it, but don't reopen it again and again (It is not a funny game) .
