Description Mateusz 2014-02-28 07:41:20 UTC
Application: kwin (4.11.6)
KDE Platform Version: 4.11.3
Qt Version: 4.8.6
Operating System: Linux 3.12-1-686-pae i686
Distribution: Debian GNU/Linux testing (jessie)

-- Information about the crash:
- What I was doing when the application crashed:

After upgrading to KDE: 4.11.3 (Qt: 4.8.6) desktop effects stop working. From time to time some windows shows only black. I was trying to change coposition to OpenGL 3.1. Any change causes a crash. One of many effects that is not working is transparency.

The crash can be reproduced every time.

your chip(/driver combo) does not support OpenGL3 - the crash does only happen when trying to activate it and the black windows are a separate issue?

please run (in konsole)
   kwriteconfig --file kwinrc --group Compositing --key GLCore false
then reboot (really)

If OpenGL compositing works afterwards, please
- do not try to enable GL3
- attach the output of "QT_SELECT=qt4 qdbus org.kde.kwin /KWin supportInformation"

It seems that the problem is in OpenGL in general. Not working any of it
(1.2, 2.0 or 3.1). Surprisingly XRender works just fine (of course it
doesn't support 3D effects).

Regarding the "black windows" problem - it stopped to happen (at least
for few hours now) after I moved ~/.kde directory (I've had config there
since KDE 3.x). "Black windows" effect started to show itself -
regardless of what I was doing (although switching between many windows
and browser tabs seemed to accelerate this problem). When it happened I
couldn't even open K-menu - I didn't see it panel - and any new opened
window was pitch black.

Before updating, OpenGL works fine. My configuration was like that (from
old kwinrc file):

[Compositing]
AnimationSpeed=3
Backend=OpenGL
Enabled=true
GLColorCorrection=false
GLCore=true
GLLegacy=false
GLPreferBufferSwap=a
GLTextureFilter=2
GraphicsSystem=raster
HiddenPreviews=5
OpenGLIsUnsafe=false
UnredirectFullscreen=false
XRenderSmoothScale=false

BTW I am using Intel i915 mainboard with integrated graphics.

Done. OpenGL still doesn't work (2.0 or 1.2).

How can I do this?

Nope.
- What's the output of "xrandr -q"? (Notice that the chip only support 2048x2048, but you should get a warning and not a crash)
- What do the OpenGL 1.2 crashes look like?

That looks like bug #324247

Can you try on 1440x900?

The chip officially only supports 1600x1200 (though probably announces 2048x2048) and for some reason you're ditching in the software rasterizer, where this crashes. 1680x1050 might work as well (no idea), but you rather don't want to use the SW rasterizer in the first place.

I was mistaken, when I wrote that I have i915 chip. Actually I have Q35.

Graphics Controller (rev 02)

According to
http://ark.intel.com/products/31918/Intel-82Q35-Graphics-and-Memory-Controller
this chip supports QXGA (2048x1536)

Besides, before update I had no problems with this resolution.

I tried on 1440x900 - same problem:

Application: KWin (kwin), signal: Segmentation fault

Using host libthread_db library
"/lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libthread_db.so.1".

I suspect bug #327310 - you probably can't compile a patch, can you?

Does
   kwin_gles --replace &
work? (except blurring)

Ultimately, please post the output of
     kwin --replace &
(since we won't get supportInformation)

Can you run "glxgears"?

-> Very stupid question: you're not still using UXA acceleration, are you?
(Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log, look out for either "sna" or "uxa")

$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
Naruszenie ochrony pamięci (eng.: segmentation fault)

Nope.
Comment 16 Thomas Lübking 2014-03-13 12:17:17 UTC
IOW OpenGL is generally broken.
From the glxinfo i cannot really say why, but if glxgears segfaults, you can expect about every GL client to segfault :-(

From the KWin backtraces, it's likely related to the driver dropping into the software rasterizer.
You do not export "LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1", do you?

I don't:

~$ echo $LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE
~$

And there is nowhere such string in KDE config files.
