Description francois 2014-02-22 10:54:40 UTC
the travel between left and right of the cursor give no information about the progression of the job. It's totaly useless. A progressiv bar would be more useful.

Reproducible: Always

I don't understand, please ellaborate
Comment 2 Harald Sitter 2014-02-24 08:45:36 UTC
He means the progressbar when updating using muon-updater. Instead of actually progressing it is used as busy indicator (barfill moves around, from left to right and back...). The reporter asks it to be actual progress indication (e.g. 32/100 percent of update finished)

Excuse me, i don't speak current english. Harald Sitter explains precisely my request. Thank you to him.

What is weird is that sometimes the progressbar does appear to work (e.g. showing the percentage of downloads done and percentage of updates done). But other times it just moves around as a busy indicator.

I think the bar moves back and forth (as opposed to showing a percentage) when it is just trying to *connect* to the repository but before it has gotten anything.

At any rate, this is not a duplicate of my request, bug 334466. My concern is that it uses a single progress bar to summarize both downloading and installing. In the old site, 50% always indicated that all the downloading was done, and then from 50% to 100% was the installation. In the new version, it tries to estimate the total time, and generally it appears to overestimate the total based on the download (as downloading is usually much slower than installing. Accordingly, it usually nowhere near 100% when it finished.

My wish was either to go back to the old way of doing it, or, better in my view, to have *two* bars, one for downloading and the other for installing, since they really are different and can't be estimated together.

I always see the bar moving back and forth when updating.
I never have a bar that is progressively extending to the right.

I agree with Mitch that ir would good to have a download progress and a separate installation progress bar.

In addition, a single line of text reporting the current process would be nice as well (i.e. showing the message that would appear in the terminal, for example what package is currently being downloaded or installed).

Yes, that's the idea. It goes back and forth when doing tasks that don't have a clear end such as connecting or reading a db.

It should definitely be improved.
