Since this crash, I found that my boinc installation wasn't running correctly; after increasing the pmem kernel settings to the following, I had no more display issues.  Probably not related, but the additional side effect was that no desktop applications (like for desktop settings) would look correct when running on the Plasma desktop.   Logging in under Cinnamon and running under that desktop manager would let me see the application correctly, and view menu items without random blackouts of the items not under the mouse.    Unfortunately, I didn't write down what the default settings were before I updated sysctl.conf.
