I suggest to set the default keyboard shortcut for "Show Desktop" to Meta+D (= Windows Key + D). Many people I know (including me) who use the desktop in their daily work also use the shortcut WinKey+D (Meta+D) to work with the desktop. "Show desktop" currently has no default shortcut assigned yet, the proposed shortcut is not yet been used and for users switching from Windows (or using Windows in regularly at their workplace) it would be nice to have this default shortcut. * Background information: - Desktop shortcut requested in year 2009: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/417310-how-add-shortcut-key-show-desktop.html - this is how it is done manually: http://publicstatic.de/gnu/linux/images/2013-12-15-Win-D=ShowDesktop.png (see also http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=53190, 2009) * Other systems - Linux Mint KDE Show desktop shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + D (http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/47) - Kubuntu has got: Ctrl + Alt/Super + D (http://askubuntu.com/questions/154023/how-do-i-quickly-show-hide-the-desktop) Reproducible: Always
I evaluated this some time ago (got a keyboard with a show desktop key and noticed that it's not a useful key, but just sending out Meta+D) and decided to keep it the way it is. I don't remember the exact reasons I came up why it shouldn't change, but it is along the lines that show desktop is not a useful feature anymore and we would like to replace it with better suited functionality like show dashboard and desktop effects. Given that a default shortcut doesn't make sense. Users who still want this feature can easily configure the shortcut.
Now, that Folder View is the default desktop containment, maybe it could be re-evaluated if having Meta+D as default keyboard shortcut to show desktop makes sense. This would support power-users switching from Windows.
I would support this. I always change that shortcut anyway.
