I doubt that there is anything I can do about that in KMail. You should never 
power down your computer without shutting it down properly.

However you might consider using for example ReiserFS instead of ext2 this 
filesystem is claimed to handle this case better.

If you press the reset button or pull the power plug of your computer no 
application can do any action anymore not even KMail.

If this really causes any files to disappear then that is a problem with the 
file system. Usually fsck or whatever tool is used together with ReiserFS 
tries its best to repair eventually causes damages if you boot again.
