When I activate/deactivate my touch pad, a sound plays at maximum volume. I've tried to figure where to reduce the volume. in kcm_notify in the control center under Player Settings there is (*) use KDE sound system ( ) use external player ( ) No audio output <== I switched to this to protect my ears No volume setting in this. In the phonon configuration module there is a setting for the output target device but no default volume. In kmixer I can only reduce the overall volume.
Hrvoje, openSUSE patches remove the volume slider, no? Could you advise Susanne how to control notifications volume?
(In reply to comment #1) > Hrvoje, openSUSE patches remove the volume slider, no? Could you advise > Susanne how to control notifications volume? Correct. I shall close the bug, as the lack of the controllers is a downstream issue (that they don't work in practice isn't, but we have reports for those already) @Susanne, can you create a bug report at Novell's bugzilla so we can find the best solution? Meanwhile, only working control for adjusting event sounds can be found in the pavucontrol application. The control in kcm has been removed due to bug 324975, and the one in the KMix due to bug 327992.

(In reply to comment #3) > It's tracked here: > https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=845635 Unfortunatly, it looks as if the discussion bounces back. See the discussion at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=845635 and the comment of Wolfgang Bauer. My present understanding is that Suse has only deactivated an option that did not work anyway. So, the situation is such that KDE forces users to use pulseaudio (PA) and pavucontrol to control the volume of system notifications. The questions remains: Why ? I and maybe other users have no intention to use PA at all - because of bugs and so called "features" that create more problems on most of my Opensuse systems with different soundcards than PA actually solves. So, why does KDE not provide users who do not use PA with an option to control the relative volume of system notifications any more ??? For us this bug is not solved at all !
(In reply to comment #5) > So, why does KDE not provide users who do not use PA with an option to > control the relative volume of system notifications any more ??? After a new test of W. Bauer and tests on my own systems the situation became clearer : Actually, on all of my raw alsa systems * with KDE packages without the SuSE patch * without PA, * with gstreamer as phonon backend the original KDE control slider in the system notifications kcm (under the "player settings" tab) HAS the expected effect. The only thing that the slider position under "player settings" does not influence on systems without PA is the volume of the notification TEST sound of kcmshell4 kcmnotify. That was the source of my misunderstandings because I expected to hear a reduced sound there after using the kcm slider. However, the volume control slider DOES have the desired effect on real notification sounds generated due to system and application events. It was W.Bauer who found that out. I have afterwards confirmed this on my own Opensuse 13.1 systems without PA. So no need to reopen this bug. But SuSE may have to take a decision regarding their elimination of the kcm control for the notifications volume.
