Description Vitaliy Filippov 2013-11-08 19:19:41 UTC
Hi! Kmail already has support for multiple tabs, but message composer always opens in a separate window.
Why not make it open in a tab? I think it's more convenient. Actually I'm surprised no one did post this bug before, because for example for Thunderbird there exists a similar long-lived bug with 164 votes (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=449299).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Click new message.
Actual Results:
Composer window opens.

Expected Results:
Composer should open in a TAB.

We can't because we need specific menubar for composer
We will not add a menu a mainwidget which already has a menu

In fact I like the usability of Opera Mail very much, that's why I've filed this bug. I would be very very happy if some opensource email client would have the same level of usability. Aside from composing messages in tabs there are some other "features" of KMail that hurt it, for example, you need to list messages with special hotkeys instead of just up/down/pgup/pgdown, because the focus always goes into the message view, so the message list doesn't get your keypresses.
And yes, composing messages in tabs is a real killer-feature of Opera Mail... I really hate separate windows for each message and each composer.
About the menu: yes, there is a menu... But maybe it's possible to merge it with the main window's one, and show/hide parts of it depending on current active tab? (if I remember correctly I've seen something like this in KDevelop)
And some of the options may be even removed totally, because they're just duplicated with the main window's menu.

This bug has only been reported for versions before 4.14, which have been unsupported for at least two years now. Can anyone tell if this bug still present?

If noone confirms this bug for a Framework-based version of kmail2 (version 5.0 or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.12 or later), it gets closed in about three months.

Just as announced in my last comment, I close this bug. If you encounter it again in a recent version (at least 5.0 aka 15.08), please open a new one unless it already exists. Thank you for all your input.
