(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***) Package: kmail Version: 1.3.1 (using KDE 2.2.1 ) Severity: wishlist Installed from: Compiled From Sources Compiler: Not Specified OS: Not Specified OS/Compiler notes: Not Specified An auto-save feature would be very useful in kMail. There should be a configuration option to specify an auto-save interval and whether the auto-save should happen automatically or only after confirmation. Messages should be auto-saved to the drafts folder. (Submitted via bugs.kde.org)
at first, the message editor shouldn't close when saving to drafts, and when reopening, the message shouldn't be deleted from drafts until sent! we have a lot of electricity outages here and I've seen a couple of very bad system crashes, so I think that having a copy of message just in RAM is a very bad idea ... (editing using kwrite or so and then pasting to kmail, the method I use for long messages today, isn't very comfortable...) kavol-AT-email-DOT-cz
Replaced jmartin@csr.csc.uvic.ca with null@kde.org due to bounces by reporter
I agree with the "save in drafts" until sent... I also agree most emphatically with "auto save" to drafts folder... Perhaps the "close or not" issue could be solved by having a "save and continue" editing menu choice in composer along with "save and quit" editing menu choice (obviously, both of these choices are different from "send")...
hi, I have nearly forgotten about this bugreport since the behaviour was greatly improved - the messages are now stored somewhere and they reappear on the new kmail start if editing is somehow interrupted (if kmail gets killed) ... however, I have just lost one message that did not reappear; I tried searching the disk for the text of it but with no success :-( So I would really like to see this wish implemented, a) to have the autosave place known and under user control (the drafts folder is fine) and b) to be able to force to save a current message without closing it, possibly storing several revisions or a "template" to reuse.
ahem, I don't see this bug as resolved (in KMail 1.12.3, KDE 4.3.3) - you still can't have a backup copy of the message you are editing saved in drafts folder ... once you choose to save as draft, the editor closes, once you open the message to edit it, it disappears from drafts folder
That's true ... but it has nothing to do with original bug. Can you please report your own wish for that? And please look through "draft" bugs/wishes for kmail before - I'm quite sure one of the thousands open wishes is similair :)
