Description Dan MacDonald 2013-10-16 13:07:47 UTC
I'm led to believe, from what I've read online, that I should be able to use the Find tool within Dolphin to search for files WITHOUT enabling Nepomuk. However, on my KX Studio (Ubuntu 12.04.3 w/ KDE 4.11.2 from the Kubuntu Precise PPA) install, I only get a very non-descript 'Invalid Protocol' error message if I try using Dolphin's find tool when both Nepokmuk and its file indexer aren't enabled.

Should Find work under Dolphin without Nepomuk? Regardless of this, 'Invalid Protocol' is too vague to be of any use an an error message. It should tell the user about the Find tools Nepomuk requirement and where to go to fix it if it doesn't present the user with an option to quickly enable the required services.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Make sure Find is enabled in the Dolphin toolbar but disable Nepomuk
2. Try searching for a file
3. Wonder why no-one is else really that bothered that searching for files doesn't work very well in the latest version of default file manager of Linux's original DE!?
Actual Results:
'Invalid Protocol'

Eh?

Expected Results:
Working Find tool with better error messages

Also, Dolphin's Find should really show the full paths of found files without having to look at its properties or open the file in a new tab or window but I think this is a bug fix/feature request for the KDE find kpart is it?

Thanks for the bug report.

Possibly because not everyone can reproduce the problem. Searching without enabled Nepomuk works just fine here. Maybe you can check with the Kubuntu people if something is wrong with their packages? The package that contains Dolphin should also install the file

filenamesearch.protocol

(on my OpenSuse system, it's in the directory /usr/share/kde4/services/).

If it is not installed, you will get the "Invalid Protocol" error.

You can add the "Path" as additional information in any view mode. If you use the default settings, search results should actually be shown in Details View with the "Path" column enabled by default.

Closing as DOWNSTREAM because I think that the problem is not a Dolphin bug, but specific to the distribution.

Please do not send me support requests by private mail. If you post them in a more appropriate place, it enables other people to see them, and to reply.

Please ask the Kubuntu people. It could be that the 4.11.2 packages don't interact well with the default KDE packages of the (rather outdated) Kubuntu 12.04.

Dolphin provides everything that is needed for searching when built and installed correctly, so I do not see why we should reopen the bug unless you have evidence that there really is something wrong in Dolphin's source code.

Right-click the Details View header, and click the checkbox next to "Path" from the "Other" menu.

OK - thanks Frank!

I have informed the maintainer of the kubuntu PPA of my issue and I can now
see the path of Dolphin's search results.

I never expected path to be under the 'other' sub-menu. It should really be
took out of there and placed alongside size and date because its just as
important - certainly moreso than Type, which it could displace if space
was a real issue.
