Description Tammo Tjarks 2013-10-01 22:27:34 UTC
I use kde already since a longer time, but since kde 4.7 I have trouble with kmail on a regular base.
Yesterday I had already an update and all my mailfolders have been lost (no Idea why). I had to reimport everythin. Today I got a new update and I see again always, selecting a new mail, the annoying message:
"Der Inhalt des Ordners wird abgeholt

Bitte warten ..."
(The contend of the folder will be fetched, please wait).
After some time, the mail is visible. But I have alredy several times removed the akonadi directory and rebuild the database. I have also removed a lot of mails.
Is there any chance, that you get rid of the unnerving message and show the Mails as fast as in the past, with the kde 4.6.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Hi,

Yesterday, I upgraded from opensuse 12.3 to 13.1, and kmail(4.11.3) was blocked opening messages with similar messages about the message being loaded.
The system was using a lot of cpu for kmail, akonadi and mysql.
Looking for a solution I found this bug report that looked like my issue.

But the solution to fix my issue was in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=322958

I summarize, but you can read the other bug report.

run akonadiconsole
in tab Browser look for duplicate entries, for me all were duplicated (Inbox, Outbox, Templates...) and remove the duplicate ones, but only the ones that are empty.

Then I launched again kmail and it was fine.

Can you check if this workaround fixes your issue?
This would mean this bug entry is a duplicate.

Cheers

Hello Marc,
sorry for waiting this long with answering your mail. To be honesty, the
reason I wrote the Bug report was, that I was really angry. I hat always
the problem, that Kmail got horrible slow and I got only the
info: "Please wait while updating the Folder". Anyway, the methode to
solve the problem was, to remove the akonadi database and to rebuild it.
In the week before I wrote my bug report I have done this already more
than once and after a short period it got slow again. Maybe I should
remove more E-Mails but at the other hand. If I have only a few E-Mails
I do not need a database anyway. However, after another KMail update it
got slow again and after removing the database again, that the emails
vanished. Luckily enought I did not remove the E-Mails directly after
download (use POP3). But I was in no mood anymore to use KMail any
longer. I had the problem already since 4.7. So I gave up on this and
switched to Thunderbird. So I can not really give an update on this.
Maybe I will try it in the future again.

Best regards,
Tammo

Thank Tammo for your report and Marc for your comment.

It is about a version of KMail which uses Nepomuk and is unmaintained. Thus
closing. If you still see performance issues please open a new report. But
please follow the following guide lines to avoid unnecessary work for the
developers:

- Ideally test with KDEPIM and Akonadi 15.08. It contains some performance
improvements like the binary protocol.

- Otherwise at least use KDEPIM 4.14.10 and newest Akonadi 1.13 you can get as
it already contains some performance improvements.

- If you can wait, please retest with KDEPIM and Akonadi 15.12 once they become
available for you. Akonadi 15.12 will contain *massive* performance
improvements implemented by Dan due to new database indexes, optimized queries
and leveled file_db directory. All of these are in master already, so if you
dare use kdesrc-build to compile KF5, kdepim and kdepim-runtime. I am using
this currently and it basically moves the bottleneck to KMail (displaying message list
of huge folder). It is a *huge* improvement. And also Volker and Dan work to improve
message list display speed as well.

Thank you and greetings from KDE Randa Meetings,
