Description re_nelson 2013-08-19 00:14:11 UTC
I've seen similar bug reports but not one matching this strange, quirky behavior that I classify as an annoyance-only BUG.

After upgrading (using source) from 4.10.5 to 4.11.0, the one and ONLY problem is that upon launching KDE (using "xinit /usr/bin/startkde"), all of the Folder View icons revert to the generic images such as gears for applications and plain folders for folders.

The remedy is very simple -- just hover the mouse over the icon and the images I has specified all reappear.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Log out if KDE-4.11.0
2. Log back in to KDE-4.11.0.
Actual Results:
Folder view icons revert to generic images. Hovering with the mouse over each restores the iconic image I specified.

Expected Results:
Folder view icons should retain the images I specified without the need to hover.

a). I'll followup with an additional post to illustrate how it behaves.
b). This never happened with KDE-4.10, 4-9 and 4.8, all of which I built from source, upgrading each version from its predecessor.

See the URL showing the three phases of the problem.

1). Upon launching KDE-4.11.0.

2). After hovering over a few icons.

3). After hovering over all icons, restoring the images for each.

I have since found a way to resolve the matter of icons reverting to a default state:

1). Create a new "Folder View" activity using ~/Desktop as the source for the *.desktop files.
2). Manually repopulate the new "Folder View" activity so that it looks like the original activity.
3). Delete the original "Folder View" activity, which was named "Main".
4). Rename the newly-created "Folder View" activity to "Main", the same as the original activity with the misbehaving icons.

I have preserved all state data from ~/{.config,.kde,.local} so that I can easily replicate the problem that led to this bug report in the event that anyone wants more information. My remedy is satisfactory but understanding the misbehaior illustrated in the URL referenced in this report would be optimum.

I'm going to close this matter since the remedy described in the post of 2013-08-19 17:35:30 UTC is sufficient. Also notable is that "Manage Notification -> KDE Workspace -> Play a Sound -> (Login|Logout)" that had been enabled in KDE-4.10.5 became disabled with the upgrade to 4.11.0.

I surmise that there have been some configuration differences between the current and prior version to the extent that minor annoyances arise.
