I launched Kontact and while trying to navigate to the contacts list, I was prompted that the calendar had crashed.

I'm on Linux Mint 15 x86_64

Unfortunately, the backtrace doesn't contain much helpful information due to uncaught exception (not your fault). 

If you can reproduce the crash every time,  please follow the guide[1] and try to run akonadi_kcal_resource under gdb to get a better backtrace.

The KResource compatibility bridges don't exist anymore with KDE PIM 15.08.
