When one right-clicks a track, one can bring the Track Details dialog, where the track can be rated using stars. A track can get from 0 to 5 stars, and half-stars. Such a rating is possible from the playlist and works fine there. But of course, one generally rates a song after listening to it, so people generally rate in the Track Details dialog. Stars are much smaller in this dialog. They could be bigger, but that's not my request. My problem is that using the rating field is really hard - much more harder than rating from the playlist than the size difference would suggest. It is particularly hard to assign a non-integer number of stars (i.e. half-stars). The behavior is buggy - If I put my mouse to the left of the stars, vertically centered, than slowly bring the cursor towards the right, the stars don't lighten gradually. One illuminates, then is greyed again, then lightens again... even though I never go to the left. I asked on #amarok if others got the same, but got a single answer. Mamarok said it was hard to rate 3½ stars (for example), but didn't clearly say he experienced the same problem. The behavior seems to be predictable but very weird, it would be hard to describe (a video would show well). I think the problem should be obvious if someone tries the field for 30 seconds. If it's not, you don't have the problem.
I just noted that ratings can be integrated in the playlist. Moreover, they can be edited right from there. Unfortunately, the same bug affects the field in the playlist.
I can't reproduce this on current Amarok v2.8.0-353-ga643972
I still experience this with 2.8.0 (I did not test VCS snapshots).
Created attachment 120962 [details] video or erratic star rating behaviour I can reproduce with Amarok 2.9.0 on Ubuntu Budgie 18.04. It is so tricky to rate with half stars that I was looking online for an Amarok feature request to add the ability to rate with half stars. As I move the cursor sideways, the highlighted star area erratically changes between empty, half and full. See attached video.
Thank you for the feedback, adapted version
For a more precise description: The actual issue is: - The erratic highlighting of stars when hovering with the cursor, along with - the mismatch between the highlighting and the result of clicking. I just found out that, to rate with half stars, one has to click twice on the star. This behaviour does make sense to me (i.e. clicking repeatedly on a star to switch between full, half and empty), but what threw me off was the (erratic) highlighting of stars when hovering with the cursor. If one sees half a star highlighted when hovering with the cursor, they would expect to see the track rated with half a star when they click.
