Description m.wege 2013-06-25 17:14:14 UTC
When I select "Last month" or "This month" there appears a list of virtual folders for every day. Apart from the fact that I find the outlook of going through every folder to find a file not very comfortable (which I would suggest to change, but I do not have a good suggestion), the folders appear in the sorting which was set before. So if I had the sorting set to "By Name" all the virtual folders which just contain the day and date are still sorted by name (which makes the view even more chaotic than before). In this setting, it would make very much sense to automatically turn the sorting to "By Date".
[I thought there was a timeline component in Dolphin, could not find it.]

Reproducible: Always

Thanks for the report.

Actually, timeline has nothing to do with Dolphin itself. There is a timeline component in Nepomuk. But what you say here might either be a Dolphin issue or not a bug at all.

This is definitely not a Dolphin issue.

If you have enabled "Use common view properties for all folders", this is to be expected. If, OTOH, you use different view properties for all folders, and Dolphin does not remember view properties for any "timeline" folders that you have visited before, then this is a bug.

Thinking about it again, we could actually do something in Dolphin. When searching, we always use Details View + the "Path" column (unless Dolphin is configured to use the same view properties for all URLs). We could do something similar for timeline: URLs and always sort by "Date" when such a URL is opened.

The idea mentioned in comment 2 can of course still be implemented, but given the newer decision to remove the entries "This month"/"Last month" from the Places panel it might not be worth the effort. I'll set this to CONFIRMED, but I think we can justify a "minor" priority on this report.

This is still an issue on dolphin 21.03.70.

Sorting by name inside each month is awful as it shows the day first ie Sunday, 27 September 2020 which makes for an awful sort order.

If they can't be sorted better perhaps naming them as 2020.09.27 would be better as they'd then sort properly.

The timeline would likely be better with a last month or last week, better grouping instead of days which are a bit too fine grained.
