Description joe_beall 2013-06-14 18:12:04 UTC
I have been using KMyMoney in various versions since 2009 without any major issues. The current problem started last month (May/13) while I was running Mint 11. My backup procedure is to use the Backup selection from the File menu, selecting a folder in my Documents directory as the destination. I then would copy the session's data file by drag-and-drop over to a folder on an external hard drive, so there was a "double backup" so to speak. I started getting error messages ("Error Copying File") if I tried to copy a second session in the same day over to the hard drive. Before this happened I would simply be asked if I wanted to replace the old file with the new one and I would select "Replace" and this is how it worked for years. I then started getting the error message mentioned in the Summary above and have tried changing the destination folder to something different but nothing changes. I then decided to get rid of Mint 11 and install Ubuntu starting with 11.04 and upgrading to 12.04 and in the process reinstalling KMyMoney and using my last good data file from my secure backup on the external hard drive. The results are the same as before as stated in the Summary.

Reproducible: Always

If the error is with copying the backup file that KMM created in the Documents subdirectory to the external drive, then it is probably not a KMM error, but we'll certainly try to figure out what the problem is.

First, please confirm that backing up from the file menu is OK, even more than once a day. The error occurs trying to copy the file from the Documents subfolder to the external drive? Does that error happen with the first backup of the day, or only the second? What is the name of the file? Are you sure the external drive is mounted?

Hi Jack,
First things first, I guess. I was falling way behind in posting my
accounts and decided to go ahead and do a reconstruct from a point in
the past where I knew I had no problems. Quite a lengthy process but
KMM seems to work OK now. I was able to use the backup function from
File menu and successfully saved the data in a new sub folder of my
Home/Documents.
I will try to make a clearer picture of what happened as the
malfunctions got progressively worse with time, it wasn't just one
problem. My original setup was that I would use the Backup command
from File and save the data to a folder in my Home/Documents directory.
I would then drag and drop a copy of that data into a similarly-named
folder on an external hard drive, a kind of double backup. If there was
more than one session in a day the newer data would be prompted to
replace the old data in each location without any problems.
Problems started about a month ago when I tried to drag and drop a copy
of the data from a second session from my Home/Documents backup to the
external hard drive backup (the first one would go OK). I would get a
message saying there was an "Error Copying File" so I decided to try
just copying once a day to the external hard drive instead of at the end
of each posting session. This seemed to work OK. A little later,
though, I started having problems even doing the backup from the File
menu. I suspected that my Mint 11 might be the cause of the problem but
after nuking Mint and installing Ubuntu the problem just followed me
until I did the reconstruct.
Hope this answers your questions OK.
Thanks.
Joe

Just to be clear, are you saying your problem no longer exists? Above, you only go as far as saying that ">.... KMM seems to work OK now. ", whereas I thought that the issue occurred after you had done the initial backup, and then attempted to copy that file to your external drive. On the attempted second session, you originally got a warning that that file name already exists, but this not occurring tied in with the error message you got instead.

If you should get a recurrence, for your second attempt, try saving to a different folder, then compare that file name with the first one. Are they in fact the same? Another idea might be to use a different name for the second file, if you get a warning, followed by an error. Also, I assume there is adequate free space on your external?

Hi Allan,
Correct, the lengthy reconstruct seems to have done the trick. To
clarify, the "reconstruct" was uninstalling KMM and then reinstalling it
as "new" using the data file from a point in the past I knew to be
problem-free and then rebuilding the accounts from that point in time
onward using my bank statements and unposted transaction vouchers.
The problems occurred pre-reconstruct. While I was still having
problems I did try changing the backup location but with the same
resulting error messages and, yes, I have gobs of room on that external
drive.
So, thanks very much for tackling this for me but, in truth, I think I'm
OK now although I'm curious as to why KMM went off after working well
for so long.
Joe

Comment 5 Jack 2013-06-15 16:27:29 UTC
Given that the error happened trying to copy the file from where KMM put it to the external drive, I really believe that KMM is just a red herring and not the real problem, since it actually created the backup file OK. It might have been interesting to try deleting the copy from the external drive before trying the copy. Also, you might have tried to get KMM to create the file directly on the external drive, and copy it back to the local folder. However, it seems like one of those things that is just not worth tracking down at this point, if you even could, given that you no longer get the error.

Joe - I think you can close the bug yourself, if you agree.
