Well, I see there are possible duplicates marked RESOLVED WONTFIX, that's not very encouraging. Video thumbnailing on my system is incredible slow. It's the ONLY part of KPhotoAlbum 4.4 that's incredibly slow. (Well, saving isn't any faster than it was before, but that's only annoying when KPA's timed automatic save kicks in.) So, instead of trying to fix it, could we please have a configuration setting to TURN VIDEO THUMBNAILING OFF? Thanks.
Whats discouraging about merging duplicate bugs? The idea behind this is to have information about one bug in one location instead of being spread over several bugs. About your bug report: do you mean the initial creation of the thumbnails, or displaying existing thumbnails?
Well, in my case it does the thumbnailing _every single restart_ (about 30 minutes for my 60k photos+videos). It became simply a very complicated thumbnailing tool, for thumbnails in a format usable nowhere else. This is happening for kphotoalbum 4.4, 4.5 on kubuntu 13.04, 13.10, 14.04, 14.10 and now 15.04 At least, it does no longer crash when it cannot compute the thumbnail of some videos.
This bug here might be out of date. Afaik, we did some work on speeding up the creation of videothumbnails in the past. If thumbnailing is done on each start, there is probably something wrong with file permissions of the .videothumbnails folder ... (?)
As of 2024-05-22, KPhotoalbum v5.9.1 on my systems seems to do video thumbnailing just fine. Don't know if this was a change in KPhotoalbum, or some underlying system library. I don't think this bug needs to remain open. Thanks for whatever the fix was!
Thanks for checking and reporting back! Closing the bug...
