The program showed error message on startup that claims the user doesn't have proper permissions. That should not be, unless the program failed to install properly be requesting users be placed in a particular group. Further, if it needs a password, it should ask. The desktop file says "X-KDE-SubstituteUID=true", so the launcher should request the password. How do you launch kSystemLog?

Do you mean which menu system? I'm using Fedora 18. Does that help?
No, it does not help. Please ask in a forum of your distribution, which launcher you are using.
How about Xfce 4.10.1? That is the DE.
XFCE probably does not support the X-KDE-SubstituteUID property mentioned in comment #2, so you should see the same issue with other KDE applications, such as konqueror (root mode), kuser, or partitionmanager. Maybe those .desktop file could be changed to use "xdg-su", but I am not sure if this a suitable replacement. Reassigning to kdelibs.
