Haven't you already filed 2 bug reports about sounds in KTp? https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=309924 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=309925 My answer will be the same. We use the "correct" file from the sound theme, which is shared in multiple apps. If you have any issues with the default KDE sound theme, please file a bug under the product "artwork" for the team who make the sound theme.
Why cant you route it to the product "artwork" . Shouldn't this be a requirement generated by KDE IM team? Alerts sounds have various use cases, the default sound theme is not very good for IM. The bug i suppose affect KDE IM, but should be fixed in artwork, but artwork was not very intuitive productname and hence I filed it under KDE IM

No longer a problem in Plasma 5. The sounds are quite soft and pleasant (IMHO).
