(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***) Package: kdesktop Version: KDE 2.2.0 Severity: wishlist Installed from: RedHat RPMs Compiler: gcc 2.96 OS: Linux OS/Compiler notes: Not Specified I have defined the wallpapers to change every 10 minutes from images in a directory. In this directory I have about 14000+ symlinks to images. When kde starts it takes takes a long time much longer than it takes for root where I have the default wallpapers and if I change the wallpaper options before the dialog shows up and when I accept the changes KDE takes easily 5 minutes with heavy hard disk usage. (Submitted via bugs.kde.org)
I can confirm this. In my case i use a number of dirs filled with wallpapers which reside in my fileserver that i access through NFS. Whenever kdesktop is launched or i start the Background kcontrol module it takes easily 20 seconds of heavy network access for it to appear. Also, the desktop freezes everytime it changes the wallpaper.

kdesktop is no more developed. On KDE 4 the plasma-desktop behave differently and this bug is no more valid.
