Is there any test suite where one can easily check out whether this reported behavior still affects the current versions of konqueror/kjava?
Yes, the webmin applets (eg. Others|File Manager). But you don't have to test, it's still there in kde-3.1 and in HEAD it only works with setting 'Use KIO'
