Description Christoph Lange 2013-04-23 14:33:59 UTC
I have a document with mostly portrait pages and one page in landscape orientation. See page 7 of http://arxiv.org/pdf/1303.4193v1. Searches using Edit→Find ignore any text on the landscape page.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open the document http://arxiv.org/pdf/1303.4193v1
2. Search, e.g., for LGPL. This word only occurs on the landscape-oriented page

Actual Results:
No search results found

Expected Results:
Text on page 7 should have been found

This document is PDF 1.5 created by pdfTeX-1.40.13 – not sure if that's relevant.

It's not ignored, it's just that it's vertical text and thus we don't see words there but colums, Adobe Reader does see the text so there must be something we can do or at least "guess" but don't expect this happening anytime soon, sorry.

MuPDF can search in vertical text as well as Adobe Reader.

Am I understanding correctly that this is a limitation in Poppler about which Okular can't do much? Should it be reported as a Poppler bug?
Comment 4 Albert Astals Cid 2013-04-24 20:53:56 UTC
May or may not. We do our own spatial analysis to detect stuff like text in two columns outside of poppler so it works for all the text formats we support, OTOH we may need something for poppler.

Anyway I'm the poppler maintainer and I'm going to give you the same answer over there, don't hold your breath on this getting fixed (unless you want to develop it yourself :-))

Oh, didn't know …

… but thanks for letting me know. Won't be capable of doing it myself, I'm afraid, and I will spare you another bug report or feature request for poppler ;-)
