Description piedro 2013-04-22 02:36:09 UTC
Hello!

At the moment I am on a clean Archlinux system but I had the same problem with Kubuntu 12.10 (one of the reasons I set up Arch wa this bug ...) - KDE 4.10.2.

When right clicking on a file or folder in the main Dolphin window the rightclick menu doesn't show up ...

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. right click on a folder in dolphin (view does't matter
2.
3.
Actual Results:
dolphin becomes completely unresponsive, trying to close it by clicking on the windows manager "close" button results in a crash. Alternatively wait for a long time (maybe two minutes or so - but differs from case to case) and the right click menu suddenly shows up (on the desktop of focus overlaying the actual focussed program window) and it is possible to choose an option from the menu ...

Expected Results:
trying to repeat immediatly shows the same result ...
closing doplphin doesn't change the situation ...
restarting the computer or logging out and logging in again helps for a while ...

BTW:
I tried to turn off nepomuk file indexing - didn't help
I tried to turn off file indexing AND email indexing - didn't help either ...

This behaviour is a major nuisance - it starts after letting my computer run for a while without restarting KDE ... it maybe not easy to reproduce immediatly but it ALWAYS happens after some time ...

thx for reading ... I apologize if this is covered in another bug - I couldn#T find one.

Right-clicking in Dolphin works fine on Kubuntu 12.04 KDE 4.10.2 from backports. (FWIW.)

-> "In order to workaround this issue open dolphin settings, go to "Services" and disable "File to activity linking plugin"."

@Frank Fellner: Thx but I don't have a service by this name ...

I will check into the other thread then ...

thx

I checked the other bug: this here is NOT a duplicate ...

I never selected with CTRL + A and i don't have the " file to activity plugin" enabled nor installed ...

I cannot identify when exactly this behaviour starts happening but it seems it starts after some uptime ... I try to find out more precise how long or to what correlating process ...

thx, p.
Comment 6 Franz Trischberger 2013-04-22 15:18:48 UTC
Judging from the comments in the other bug it is clear that it is not neccessary to "CTRL+A" before right clicking.
Do you use a localized KDE (non-english)? probably the plugin name got translated in the meantime.
Anyway - if it happens again get the process ID of the running dolphin instance (e.g. "ps a | grep dolphin") and execute
gdb attach PID (replace PID by the actual ID)
then (when gdb finished loading) run
thread apply all bt
and post the output.

Closing until we get the information requested in comment 6. Thanks for your help!
Comment 8 piedro 2013-04-23 02:39:12 UTC
Though I switched the application language to english I couldn't see the plugin, - but you are right: the title of the plugin is something like "module for linking files with activities" and it stayed in german transaltion even after the language switching (everything else is in english ...).

Now I disabled that plugin. I will let KDE run for at least 48 hours and report back.
Though I have to say: dolphin immediately fells more responsive than before.

thx everybody, this might still be a duplicate after all, if so I apologize for my misjugdement,
piedro

Now I left KDE running for quite some time, 50 Hours at least, and dolphin is still snappy ...
So you've been right about the module ... disabling solves the problem ...

So for me this is solved (it might not be for the people who want to use the " files to activities"-funcionality) ...

thx for your efforts,
piedro
