Description ray-ven 2013-04-13 19:11:03 UTC
as I mentioned in another wish, I'm supporting about 1500 KDE users. We're using almost a "out of the box" KDE environment (because I want people who use it at home don't get lost in our environment)

It seems to me that a huge opstacle for users is just the name "dolphin" for a filemanager. They cannot see how the name dolphin is related to a filemanager (yes i know, kmenu says in it's description "filemanager", but people don't see that, especially if it's a button on the desktop)

believe it or not, but people get frightened of such "strange" names.
This doesn't mean we have to rename all apps, but the filemanager is just a very basal thing.
If people can find their files easily they're happy.

Reproducible: Always

Why don't you simply put a folderview applet with folders such as "Pictures", "Downloads", "Documents" etc on the desktop? At least that's what I see when installing openSUSE.

sure, i can do so, atm whe're using the quick-access-browser. Still, the name is confusing a lot of people.

Thanks for the report. Please note:

a) I took over Dolphin's maintainership only last year, i.e., more then 6 years after its development started, and more than 4 years after it became KDE's default file manager. I would consider it inappropriate for me to change the name unless there was an extremely good reason.

b) I'm not aware of any earlier complaints about the name. For more than 5 years, KDE users seem to have been happy with the name of the default file manager.

c) Most other file managers don't have "understandable" names either. You might argue that Explorer and Finder are sort-of understandable, but there's also Nautilus, Thunar, PCMan, etc. Also KDE's former default file manager Konqueror does probably not have an understandable name in your opinion.

d) Distributions are free to change the names of applications (or at least the words shown next to the application's icons on the Desktop) if they believe it improves the user experience. I'm not aware of any distribution that did this so far.

I could continue the list, but I think you get the idea. I'm definitely not going to change the name as long as I am responsible for the application.

And no, I do not believe that anyone gets frightened because an icon with 'Dolphin' written next to it is shown on the screen.

BTW, if you point out anything that is not good in your opinion, you should at least suggest a better solution, i.e., in this case, a better name. I think it's not easy at all to find a descriptive name that is not something extremely generic like "Files".

Non-constructive criticism is not welcome here.

I like "Dolphin" and it is as understandable as "Firefox", "Thunderbird", "Amarok", "Gimp" and a long long list of other applications ;).

Closing, see Frank's replies for a rationale.
