This bug may be related to bug #316968. Apparently it is due to some inconsistencies in packages that install" lpr" command like "lpr" package and "cups-bsd" package and possibly lpr packages that are part of a particular printer setting (none in my case with my brother j-315w only lpd). To solve the problem I removed "lpr" package and all normal printing of pdf files resumed. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. both "lpr" and "cups-bsd" packages present 2. unsuccessful try to print pdf file : in konsole an error message related to "lpr command" 3. Actual Results: see above Expected Results: no pdf print Print pdf file. Fix : if "lpr" package is removed normal printing resumes.
Did you get any error in the UI or just in the command line?
I do not know what you mean by UI. I have 2 machines identical : in one it was printing pdf files on the other not. I the one with okular not able to print I ran okular from a konsole and I collected an error message with no meaning but related to "lpr". Then I checked wich packages linked to "lpr" were present in one computer and not in the other. This is how I found the proposed fix.
UI = user interface So the user interface of okular said nothing at all?
nope if you mean when running okular is there any error message. Basically nothing happens when the bug is active except the fact that apparently everything is spooled in /var/spool/cups (to be confirmed). From a konsole you get a message with no meaning the the user.
So basically you had installed lpr and it was misconfigured, not sure what are we supposed to fix here. We basically found lpr and told it to print, what happens from there we can't really control sadly. I'm moving this to unconfirmed but may as well move it to invalid since as i said don't really know what we are supposed to fix.
No I removed "lpr" package and left "cups-bsd" package. Both have a lpr command and are supposed to be incompatible. Very likely the presence of both packages on my computer was resulting very likeley from an interrupted package update. Do not forget to tell me how to report a bad detection of Logitech K360 unifying keyboard (qwerty intead of azerty). Thanks
FWIW i just tried, you can't have both packages installed at the same time (apt complains), so basically it is a misconfiguration of the system. About the "Logitech K360 unifying keyboard", what does that have to do with Okular? All in all, i'm closing the bug as invalid since it was a misconfigured system (you can't have two packages providing exactly the same file)
