Description Ruchir Brahmbhatt 2013-02-20 09:18:49 UTC
I think kmail2 needs to have proper full backup and restore feature. I have ~10GB mailbox. I normally use disconnected IMAP account. It takes too long to download all mails first time kmail2 is setup. And during this process, its not properly usable so I prefer to use after all mails downloaded. However this presents a big challenge. When I have to move to other OS or new version of OS, I need to backup and restore my mails, calendars, etc.. However kmail2 currently just backs up settings and akonadi database, not the actual mails. So new setup will again take a long time. If it does a full backup and restore like evolution or thunderbird, it will be much easier to manage.

Reproducible: Always

This is one feature which is keeping me from using Kmail. I use Thunderbird and it's extremely easy there to save your folder/settings wherever you want. I have saved my mails on an encrypted external hard-drive and I don't have to worry about hopping/switching between the distros or formatting my system as all I need is run ./thunderbird -p and then point to the directory where mails/settings are saved and it takes all accounts/settings/pligins automatically. With over 30GB mail I really can't afford to not do this. I think Kmail can make it easier to manage mail/settings/plugins.

Just an update that seems current backup/restore is also not working properly so it needs a revamp to add proper full backup/restore features. I just backed up from opensuse 12.2 having 4.10 and tried to restore on new 12.3 installation with kde 4.10.1 and it didn't work. Had to create account from scratch and download all mails again! Its been 2 days and still full download is not finished.
