since page bar was taking too much of the vertical space on my netbook i keep it disabled. nevertheless, there is still plenty of space left in the top toolbar for, say, a small tool which would contain the current pagenumber and/or number of total pages...

Which we already have. Just add Page Number to your toolbar.

thanks! you're right. i did not spot it (has no icon in the selector).
