Description Myriam Schweingruber 2013-01-30 14:53:48 UTC
Since the upgrade to KDE 4.10 beta 1 I don't see KNotes in the System Tray anymore. This is a regression for me as I don't use Kontact and the display of the notes in Kontact is not really very useful, as one can't even see the notes title.
Previously it was in the SystemTray and a click on the icon showed the available notes, while a right click allowed to paste from clipboard or access the settings.

Reproducible: Always

Myriam,

I can't reproduce this with master.
Is it possible the knotes systray icon is configured to be hidden on your system?

No, as it doesn't even show up in the settings of the SystemTray. All entries are set to Auto, but no KNotes is visible there.

I will have a look at the config files of both the System Tray and Knotes and report back.

Nothing specific I can find in the config files.

I updated to KDE 4.10 final, still no dice.

But, if I remove all settings both in $HOME/.kde/share/config/ and $HOME/.kde/share/apps/ then it shows up. But when I move back the $HOME/.kde/share/apps/knotes/ folder it disappears again.

So how can I get my data in Knotes back and still have the app show in the SystemTray? Seems that there must be a setting in $HOME/.kde/share/apps/knotes/ causing that, no idea which one, though.

Likely related to bug 242407

No, the folder contains another folder, /notes that contains the data and the notes.ics and notes.ics~ files

I did have the same issues after upgrading to 4.10.0 (gentoo). So I played around a bit, without any luck. The knotes icon didn't show up under hidden icons, and it wasnt listed under "Systray Settings" -> "Entries" either. But knotes created a new note when I tried to start it and it actually was running.
Then I backed up my whole ~/.kde4 folder, deleted share/config/knotesrc and share/apps/knotes/ and knotes worked again. It still worked when I played back my complete .kde4 folder. It is possible that I already accidentally "fixed" it before making the backup, but for some reason it didn't show up.

Myriam, where you able to use knotes again, after you started it once?

Could it be that the systray icon is shown on one of your other virtual desktops or maybe activity?
We recently fixed a bug where the icon seems to "stick" to one desktop.

Sorry to disappoint you, even with only one virtual desktop and a single activity: it doesn't show up.

The bug you refer to was that notes sticked to a particular screen or desktop, not just the icon, wasn't it?
