Description David Melik 2013-01-23 04:47:04 UTC
I reported this removed feature years/months ago, but apparently someone deleted my report without rationale. One of many superior KDE3 options is one can set the desktop to show a colour gradient, and then put whatever one wants over it, such as a picture/slideshow, and set its size, such as the size of its pixels or resized to the desktop edges, or tiled, etc. KDE4 only lets you do this separately (and picture/slideshow widgets cannot be resized.) Please restore the feature of having all the multiple aspects of desktop configuration that previously existed.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install an OS with KDE4.
2. Try to set a gradient and then picture/slideshow or other second feature on it.
Actual Results:
I hated how my desktop looked.

Expected Results:
The desktop should be able to look as nice as KDE3.

Actually, perhaps it had not been deleted... maybe I was thinking about my other bug mentioning gradients. Sorry; even though KDE4 is stable now with lots of new features, I miss many things about KDE3 and would still use it if my distro had it... I am even trying to build TDE and will likely switch to that if KDE4 does not return most/all of the old features/options.

It's now five years since the introduction of Plasma. If nobody came around to implement the feature it's unlikely to happen. A generic "like in KDE 3" does not help. I don't remember such a feature from KDE 3, it's a long time.

The wallpaper infrastructure is very flexible, just look at e.g. the animated wallpapers available in 4.10. I'm quite sure that the community would have implemented a wallpaper plugin in the way you wanted it, if there would have been demands for it. But after five years it's pretty clear that nobody cares. After all it's open source, you can implement it yourself.

Btw. putting in "threats" like "switch to Trinity if you don't implement everything like it used to be" don't help you anything - nobody is impressed by that.
