Description Jay LaCroix 2013-01-20 22:27:56 UTC
I notice that when the screen locks after no activity, sometimes it doesn't actually locked. Meaning, I'll see the lock screen with a prompt for my password, but if I press any keyboard key or move my mouse, I go back to my desktop without a need to unlock the screen (despite it asking for my password). This doesn't happen every time, however.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Wait for screen to lock
2. When screen locker is displayed, screen may or may not actually be locked

Expected Results:
If the lock screen is displayed, the system should actually be locked.

The locker will only lock the screen if the time specified in the option "Require password after" has passed. Did you check that?
Comment 2 Jay LaCroix 2013-01-28 03:20:42 UTC
I think you may be misunderstanding the bug. When I go away from my desk, and I come back, if I'm gone long enough I'll see the lock screen, and it will be asking for my password. Meaning, the lock screen has already appeared. Sometimes, even though it's asking for my password, all I have to move my mouse to go back to my desktop, without having to enter the password despite the fact it was asking for it.
Comment 3 Benni Hill 2013-01-28 11:22:47 UTC
Sorry, I should have added that the password dialog will already appear before the "Require password after"-time has passed (don't know why). It will then just go away after mouse movement.
Comment 4 Marcelo Sales 2013-02-07 18:31:15 UTC
For me it is exactly the opposite: I don't check the "Require password after" check box, because I don't want the screen to be locked ever. I just want to start the screensaver after 10 minutes of inactivity. But the screen is always locked anyway, even if that checkbox is not checked.

I'm seeing this problem too as of kde 4.10. Symptom is the same as described in comment #2.

After the specified time, the lock screen appears, but can be bypassed my moving the pointer, not requiring a password.

This is obviously a grave security risk.

Not sure how to mark dupes with this bugtracker, but I see a duplicate to this bug here:

This is bug #310871 which is fixed in 4.10.1

The screenlocker activates after the "Start automatically after:" time. Optionally you can choose to select "Require password after:" so that the password is not required for some time after starting the screenlocker. This is the same behaviour as existed in previous versions of the KDE workspace.

However the unlock dialog now always appears, whether the password is required or not. This confuses things and is something we need to fix.

Does this explain your problems or do you still have concerns?
Comment 10 Jay LaCroix 2013-03-07 18:35:36 UTC
Yes, that is an accurate description of the problem.
Comment 11 Oliver Henshaw 2013-03-08 12:49:44 UTC
OK, bug #315442 seems more suited to the unnecessary and confusing unlock dialog so I'm duping to that. Please yell if you think that there's more to this bug than that.

Hi, on KDE 4.11.5. I have set the screen locker to start and the "require password after:"- is set to 5 seconds. The screen does not lock. as per the previous comments by moving the unlock button to the screen center, the screen unlocks. The system does not request a password. I have tried deleating the screenrc files in .kde\share\configure with no success.
