Description Bjoern Olausson 2012-12-10 20:57:50 UTC
I am experiencing the following bug in KDE 4.9.3, 4.9.4 and KDE networkmanagement widget 0.9.0.5.

When I use network networkmanagement widget to establish a VPN connection, and the connection is abnormally terminated or has server lags, the entire KDE GUI seems to freeze. After a couple of seconds (20-30) the GUI is responsive for a short time and freezes then again.

To solve this I have to kill X. I never had the patience to wait for the GUI to recover.

Cheers,
Bjoern

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Connect to e.g. OpenVPN server with the networkmanagement widget
2. Kill the connection by killing the server or somehow interrupt the connection
Actual Results:
The KDE GUI freezes for a long time

Expected Results:
networkmanagement widget should report a faulty connection and silently try to reestablish the connection and gracefully show a warning when giving up without freezing the KDE GUI

This behavior looks similar to bug #291563

I do not think it is Plasma NM that is freezing the GUI. It is probably another plasmoid that does not work well when network connection gets interrupted. If the vpn connection your default route to the Internet too or you use it only to access a particular vpn and the non-encrypted data goes to another connection?

I'll try with a clean user and let you know if this happens again.

Is this still happening? By the way, which plasmoid do you have running when the problem happens?
Comment 4 Bjoern Olausson 2013-01-25 14:07:22 UTC
I had the "Network Management" widget running. I disabled it an used the "Network Management" directly in the "System Tray". For now I did not experience any problems.

I think we can close the bug. If I should be able to reproduce it again, I'll let you know.

Cheers,
Bjoern
