I can confirm this bug using Kubuntu 13.04.

Restarting plasma-desktop (after a crash) brought the thumbnails back.
Comment 3 Denis M. (Phr33d0m) 2013-03-11 00:07:19 UTC
I'd also want to confirm this as it's happening to me since I upgraded to KDE 4.10 (currently on 4.10.1) on a Gentoo amd64 system.

The thumbnails appear *only* after plasma-desktop restart as mentioned above, neither disabling and re-enabling the effects did the job.
Comment 4 bill p. (aka google01103) 2013-03-11 12:29:54 UTC
works again for me, though can't remember what I did to get it to work

might have been kwin --restart
Comment 5 wintonian 2013-03-31 12:30:12 UTC
KDE 4.10.1

$ killall plasma-desktop
$ plasma-desktop

Is a 2 line method to get them back.

This only works until you reboot, then you have to do the same thing again. It's a pita.

I can confirm it still happens with KDE 4.10.2.
I'm using Chakra-linux (64-bits) on an i7 3GHz, nvidia GeForce GTS 450).
Comment 8 Alexander Diana 2013-04-03 04:09:36 UTC
Confirming happening on KDE 4.10.1 running on archlinux.
Identical system configuration, on a Intel 3000 GPU laptop the thumbnails work fine, the problem happens when using catalyst, it appears.
Comment 9 slartibart70 2013-04-03 07:00:01 UTC
Same here on fedora 17 running kde 4.10.1 with nvidia proprietary drivers. First start of kde (After logging in) does show the taskbar entries and their 'details-popup' when hovering over taskbar icons with the mouse, but not the preview (thumbnail) of the window.
A logoff-login cycle fixes it, though.
Does not happen on another (more or less identical) installation of fc17 with intel graphics.
Comment 10 triffterer 2013-04-16 06:38:58 UTC
I can confirm this bug too.
I'm running on openSUSE 12.3 x86_64 with KDE 4.10.00 "release 1" and the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver.
The occurence of this error seems completely random to me. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes I have to kill and restart plasma-desktop to make it work. Doing other things like switching desktop effects off and on again or changing rendering settings does not work.

Interestingly, I also have a laptop running the same software/OS (openSUSE 12.3 x86_64 and KDE 4.10.0). This laptop has an embedded Intel GPU running on the open source Linux driver. The KDE on the laptop never shows any sings of this bug.

Still happening with KDE 4.10.4 and nvidia proprietary drivers v313.30.
(Using CHAKRA-linux, GeForce GTS 450)
Comment 13 DeMus 2013-06-09 06:44:44 UTC
Like the above comment I also have the same problems with Kubuntu 13.04 and KDE 4.10.4.
I also use the nVidia driver 313.30.

Be aware that the property is (still) "_KDE_WINDOW_PREVIEW" as written on the forum thread, ie. NO trailing underscore.
Comment 15 whatifgodwasoneofus 2013-07-14 11:06:21 UTC
And still happens with KDE 4.11 beta2 and nvidia proprietary drivers v313.30.
Comment 16 whatifgodwasoneofus 2013-09-19 20:33:25 UTC
NEVER happened again since KDE 4.11 RC1, nvidia proprietary drivers v313.30.
Now using KDE 4.11.1, nvidia proprietary drivers 319.49, always on CHAKRA-linux, GeForce GTS 450.

Hello!

This bug report was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this bug is already resolved in Plasma 5.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this bug report. If the issue described here is still present in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!

Nate Graham
