In the event that you are working on many usb-pens or identical memories would be useful to record the serial assigning name/owner/other, in a "personal list", without making any changes on the unit. Thanks for the report. Just to make sure that I understand what you mean: You do not want to change the volume name of your external drive, but you want to be able to configure a name which is shown in the Places Panel for that device?

I don't think it makes a lot of sense to let people change the *display* name of their external disks without actually changing the filesystem labels. That seems like it will cause a lot of confusion. Why can't the flash disks just have unique volume names--at least temporarily? That seems like the most obvious solution.
