Description Ralph Moenchmeyer 2012-10-26 11:14:19 UTC
I use Kmail of KDE 4.9.2. Quite often I need to forward long mails not as an attachment but as part of the text of a new mail. I do this by the respective option for forwarding (as text).

Unfortunately the generated new mail does not contain all lines of the original mail, but only around 150 lines - which of course is wrong. I could not find any Kmail option for limiting the lines of forwarded mails. So, I regard this as a bug.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a long new mail with more than 200 lines
2. Send it to yourself
3. Forward the received mail as text of a new mail by using the appropriate forwarding option of Kmail
Actual Results:
The generated mail to be forwarded contains only about 150 lines of the original mail.

Expected Results:
I expect that the generated mail to be forwarded contains the complete text of the original email.

could you paste an email example where you have this bug please ?
Comment 2 Ralph Moenchmeyer 2012-10-27 09:02:39 UTC
I did some more testing after I saw that the bug did not occur when I used a different Kmail account.
The main difference between the two accounts is the way how I handle the signature of the Kmail identity.

For my standard account I have set an option for the komposer that the signature should be inserted before (!) the quoted text of the email to be forwarded or to be answered. With this setting the bug occurs and the quoted text is incomplete.

In the other account I insert my signature after (!) the quoted text - then the email text to be forwarded is quoted and inserted completely.

So, the bug has to do with the positioning of the signature and to verify it you need to set up Kmail such that it inserts your signature before the quoted text to be forwarded.

The bug is independent of whether I take the signature from a file or the signature field in the Kmail identity settings.

By the way : If the signature field of the Kmail identity settings only contains a line break and nothing else additional weird things happen : the quoted text than looses all line breaks. In this case independent of the position of the signature. This should be repaired, too, although I admit that a line break alone does not make much sense as a signature.

fw_mail.txt - mail to be forwarded - quotes only 155 lines

Quoted and displayed text from the komposer window of the mail to be forwarded. The generated mail is displayed with only displays 154 lines of the original mail. I marked thes 154 lines until the last letter displayed and copied then.

fw_mail_copied_marked_all.txt - marked all text instead of the 154 lines displayed before copying

before copying I chose "mark all" from the edit menu of the komposer window. Although only 154 lines are displayed, 266 lines get actually copied !!!

There are more funny things - see the attachments:

I generated a mail with 266 lines of dummy text, sent it to myself and copied the text from the opened received mail to attachment 1 [details] ("original mail text").

Then - by using the corresponding forwarding option of Kmail - I generated a mail to be forwarded which includes quoted text from the original mail. In the Kmail komposer only 154 lines are shown - which is wrong.

The komposer quotes my signature above the quoted text as you can see (compare to my description in comment #3). I copied the lines of the forward-mail shown by Kmail exactly until the last shown letter into attachment 2 [details] (fw_mail.txt).

Then, however, I used "edit -> mark all" before copying and copied again into attachment 3 [details] - (fw_mail_copied_marked_all.txt). To my full astonishment all of the original the text was copied !!! Although only 154 lines are shown in the komposer !!!

Also, after I receive the forwarded mail there are only 154 lines (see attachment 4 [details], "received_fw_mail.txt".

So this narrows down the bug - when the komposer generates the mail to be forwarded the full text is somehow there - but only a part of gets displayed and is actually sent.

Ok will look at.

This bug has only been reported for versions before 4.14, which have been unsupported for at least two years now. Can anyone tell if this bug still present?

If noone confirms this bug for a Framework-based version of kmail2 (version 5.0 or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.12 or later), it gets closed in about three months.

Just as announced in my last comment, I close this bug. If you encounter it again in a recent version (at least 5.0 aka 15.08), please open a new one unless it already exists. Thank you for all your input.
