As said here [1], digikam has a default minimal size for right and left panel a bit high for a netbook max resolution (1024x600). It's not possible to have both of them opened. If try the window expanded outside of the screen. It should be possible to have everything in the screen. As it seems right panel is fixed size, it would be better to allow a smaller size of the left panel when window size is 1024x600 or lower and let info bubble display full name of folder when browsing with mouse or keyboard. (or maybe the minimum size is depending on length of folder names?) Thanks [1] http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/digikam-users/2012-October/016927.html Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open digikam with a display or window size of 1024x600 2. open both right/left panels 3. Actual Results: window is automatically expanded to higher size, outside of the screen if applicable Expected Results: Both panel should be usable on a netbook display.
If you can attach some screen-shot of digiKam in action running under low screen, where you have identified some improvements to do, it will help to hack... Gilles Caulier

Digikam's interface is not designed with smaller form factors in mind. That could be improved, but currently is as it is.
I know. most application are not but now there is netbook, tablet and stuff and when you are travelling (especially for a long-time), you don't really want to carry a 17" laptop. So when it's possible, try to improve things, that's just the goal of this bug. It's almost 2y I'm using like this ...
still valid I may have time to dig into this in february. If possible, can you point me on the relevant source files or documentation? (minimum size of side bars) Test on 3.4 (lubuntu 13.10/kde 4.11.3 main install)
I agree with Marcel comment #4. It's very difficult to do better without to break all implementation to re-design all.
