Description andreas 2012-09-27 22:14:19 UTC
To use the MS Explorer for file management I found this useful software http://qttabbar.sourceforge.net/

So now in the office I used QTtabbar and at home Dolphin and every time a use Dolphin I miss one feature. When you make a double click with the left mouse button on the empty area of the Explorer you get one folder up, like you click on go up.

Maybe also other people like this feature. It's one of the fastest way to switch between folders (without the keyboard).

Reproducible: Always

I also miss this feature.

I know there is alt + up keyboard shortcut, but sometimes your hand is on a mouse and it would be faster to just use it.

I often use back and forward (8 and 9) buttons on mouse that have such buttons to workaround this, but it does not always work. It works only if you have entered location via it's path. But when you just switched there, for example using places panel, then pressing back button on mouse brings you to where you was previously, but not level up.

It would be real improvement if implemented just double click at empty area to go to parent directory.

Being able to double click an empty area in the File Explorer to go to the parent folder was hands down the best feature in Clover (Application to add Chrome-like tabs to MS File Explorer) and I really do miss this feature in Dolphin. It is one of those features you never knew you'd need until you have it.

It enables the user to navigate through their folder structure very, very quickly and efficiently using only the mouse.

I understand that there are already several ways to achieve the same result but having this implemented would be a big QoL improvement!

Alt + Up:
Requires both hands, which means you have to let go of the mouse, press the keys and then grab it again to continue navigating.
This is really clunky and you get tired of it pretty fast when you have to do this multiple times. Not a good user experience.

Clicking the Go up-button:
The button could be on the other end of the screen from your cursor or, like in my Manjaro KDE, could be hidden by default.
And even if the button is displayed and not that far away, you are still required to move the cursor away from the View and hit a small (just guessing) 32x32px button and then move back into the View.

Clicking the parent directory in the Location bar:
Almost the same as the Go up-button and although it is a bit closer to the View, the parent directory's position changes when you change directories. So there is a tiny small amount of extra effort involved.

Using BACK instead of UP:
Even if many mice have convenient Back-buttons or you can hit Backspace with the hand not holding the mouse: BACK is not always the same as UP. When it is, it's fine.

Double-clicking empty area in View:
You only have to move the cursor by a few pixels until there is no icon or text under it and double-click. If you have a big View but only a few files and folders, it is convenient to just aimlessly move the cursor somewhere over background and not having click a small target.

No objection, someone just needs to implement it.

I did submit a patch that lets the user choose the action triggered by double clicking an empty area (going up is an option).

Demo in last comment.

So you did, I forgot about it. Sorry it has gotten overlooked. I will test and review.

This must be off by default. Double-click + drag on a touchpad is a universal action to select objects. I use this in multiple applications across KDE and Windows.

The nonstandard behavior proposed here would screw my workflow. It makes dolphin behave differently than nearly ever app that allows selection of objects.

I think you're talking about double-*tap*, not double-*click*. Those are different, so there's probably a way to detect that so we don't mess up that workflow.

This "context menu lite" is essentially a new gesture. And shouldn't gestures be available in all KDE apps?

My other concern is I dislike of UI’s that require searching for free space. For example, when I want to move a Chrome window with many tabs open, it’s a waste of time searching for a free spot to drag by. Same for right clicking to undo close tab(with many tabs open). It’s not just Chrome, right clicking on taskbar when it’s full of active apps is no fun.

I'm interested in middle-click action on empty space. Please tell me, is this feature planned to be implemented in the future?
Comment 12 Nate Graham 2020-04-23 02:56:46 UTC
In fact a patch was already submitted: https://phabricator.kde.org/D20532. There appears to be quite a bit of demand for this feature.

Unfortunately the maintainer rejected it on fairly reasonable grounds. He'll need to be convinced to reconsider if the feature is ever to make it into Dolphin. Until then, I'm afraid I need to keep this bug report closed. It can always be re-opened if he reconsiders. No hard feelings, I hope you understand. :)

I don't think this "bug" should be closed.

The dolphin maintainer rejected my patch,
which adds an option that lets the user decide what action is triggered,
but he said "I could accept a patch that triggers the "Go up" action"
https://phabricator.kde.org/D20532#539550

So he's ok with a default "Go up" action that doesn't require an option,
what's actually requested here. Unless he changed his opinion.

With four duplicates, I think it's time to re-open this.

Here's something notable from the latest duplicate:

> Again, like the implemented feature in (Linux Mint | Cinnamon Desktop) file
> manager "NEMO", as it shows in the attached screenshot.
So we could have been a leader here, but now if we implement this, we're a follower. :( I think there's a good lesson there.

Regardless, a form of this is in progerss. See https://invent.kde.org/system/dolphin/-/merge_requests/40
