Description Jorge Adriano 2012-09-25 16:05:27 UTC
Mendeley is a free reference manager and academic social network, with a (closed source) Linux Qt client.

Often I will be reading a paper in Okular, and eventually decide I want to keep it. So I need to:
- Save it in some directory (if I don't have it yet).
- Start up Mendely (if it is not running yet).
- Import it to Mendeley.
- Delete it from disk (where I originally saved it).

It would be fantastic to have a "Import to Mendeley" option available in Okular.

Since Mendeley is closed source I understand maybe this would also require some effort on their end. So I will also open a wishlist report on that side and indicate it here.

Reproducible: Always

We have more than enough work to do so spending time supporting non free software is not an option.

Fair enough. I understand you've got more than enough on your hands.

I have to say the non-free argument makes me cringe a bit. Particularly since I remember these arguments being used against Qt and KDE (and openSUSE one of the main KDE supporters). Anyway it's not a critique, just my opinion.

Keep up the good work. Okular is looking great.
Cheers

This idea is interesting, but I would open a feature request at Mendeley. Since okular is open source for them it might be much feasible to add such feature to okular. Other option is to use a truly open source project, like, aigaion.

I have another suggestion then (hope you don't mind).

Mendeley does provide a web interface for it's service, as well as free hosting space for the papers in each users collection. The non-free desktop client is not really necessary (just convenient). So another way to go about it would be to provide an Okular plugin to upload documents directly to a user's online collection, rather than their local one.

Quite frankly, I don't know whether there is a nice easy to use API on their end to make this easy, but I can investigate/request.

Hi,
I did open a feature request on their end to, I posted the link in a previous comment:

My guess is that if they provided on their end an easy interface to add documents to the local database (e.g. mendeley --add paper.pdf) then the plugin should be rather easy.

As I just mentioned another possibility which wouldn't involve a closed desktop client, would be to inteface with their web service instead and add the document to the online collection. There are bookmarklets for firefox for that effect, so this sort of interface is possible.

Quite frankly aigaion doesn't really compare to Mendeley. Not just talking about features or software quality. But Mendeley is about much more than just the reference management software (there's discovery services, networking, statistics, etc).
