Description Thomas Arend 2012-09-12 17:55:50 UTC
Messages in the message list have are emty. No header no body.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Update to KDE 4.9.1
2. Start kmail
3. receive mails

Cant tell where the entries come from because they are totally empty. Maybe they are the poor remain of now lost messages.
Actual Results:
Possiblie destroyed and lost messages.

Program is not reliable for receiving messages.

Expected Results:
Expect that messages are not destroy and not phantom messages are in the message list.

Don't use kmail2 4.9.1 for productive use until this bug is solved.

How can I get more information out of 0 bytes.

Would it be helpful to store the messages in a file?
Comment 3 Thomas Arend 2012-09-15 02:03:45 UTC
I had installed openSUSE 12.2 and updated to 4.9.1.

Yesterday I thought the empty messages where gone, but today I found that messages without a date are now at the end of the message list.

Its hard to get more information out of zero bytes. I kmail1 I could look in the maildir for the messages. What information do you need?

Happens for me also (using KMail 4.9.3 after a very long time).

Happens here also with kmail2 from KDE-4.10 RC3.
Probably the following actions led to some mails being empty:
in a mailing list folder, I saw a thread with about 13 mails deep. Three of them are shown in kmail2 with an attachment icon.
I collapsed the thread and wanted to delete the whole thread so I pressed Shift+Del.
I now have still the whole thread, but two messages with the attachment icon are completely empty. Saving one of these to a file contains only the following:

From unknown@unknown.invalidDi. Jan 29 19:53:30 2013

But I also have other mails in the same mailing list folder which I did not touch before but the mail also shows as empty (that is: pressing "v" on such a mail brings up a completely empty "message as plaintext" window - which is in so far interesting as at least the message list shows the sender, the subject and the date.)

I'm getting this too with KDE 4.10 RC3 and have for a while. In the message list I see this
Subject Sender Date
(No Subject) Unknown Unknown

There is nothing in the body of the message and view source shows nothing.

OpenSuSE 12.2, 12.1, (different kmail versions)

One day I discovered, that a lot of messages stored locally are blank.
I'm not sure if it can help, but I use Unison to sync maildirs between hosts with different hostnames. I have an suspicion that duplicated messages files confuse kmail (I mean hostname prefix in mail file names or etc) .

Still happens in KDE 4.10.1 on openSUSE 12.3. I deleted my Akonadi data completely, re-added IMAP-accounts and it started happening right away.
Comment 9 Silver Salonen 2013-07-30 06:22:27 UTC
Still happens in KDE 4.11 RC2.
Comment 10 Dmitri Kolobov 2013-09-23 01:27:49 UTC
I use KMail to "redirect" all my mail to gmail.
Some messages stored locally became empty.
But I noticed that all of them were properly redirected by KMail to gmail, and all of them are readable.

This bug has only been reported for versions before 4.14, which have been unsupported for at least two years now. Can anyone tell if this bug still present?

If noone confirms this bug for a Framework-based version of kmail2 (version 5.0 or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.12 or later), it gets closed in about three months.

Just as announced in my last comment, I close this bug. If you encounter it again in a recent version (at least 5.0 aka 15.08), please open a new one unless it already exists. Thank you for all your input.
