Description ngia003 2012-08-27 03:41:05 UTC
I posted it earlier here and was asked to file a feature request

http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=215&t=107491

In a nutshell, the weekly buttons (when in monthly view) do not scroll smoothly. When going into a new month, the view jumps to that month rather than showing a combination of the different months (i.e. the weekly up/down buttons don't move the view on a weekly basis as would be expected). I know this used to work in older versions, since I at one time had this on an older install. Was really useful to have!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open monthly view of KOrganizer
2. Click the "Go forward one week" button on the right hand side
3. The main view doesn't shift accordingly
Actual Results:
Instead, when you keep pressing the "Go forward one week" button, nothing happens until it crosses a new month boundary. In this case, the whole month view switches to the next month rather than showing half-half of the 2 months. So, its difficult to get a clear view of tasks to perform since cannot see them at the same time.

Expected Results:
It would be expected that by pressing "Go forward one week" button once, the main calendar view moves up by one week. The same should be true for the "Go back one week" button.

+1 for this feature.

KOrganizer_View_Conf

By ticking the Scroll By Week, the client could then advance the week in the calender by one week instead of an entire month with the up or down arrows on the side of the month view..

To further explain a Weekly scroll feature as opposed to Scrolling By Month, I've enclosed a mock up of the dialog that would demonstrate the Config Setting.

The default could remain as it is in the Monthly view, since it has been the default behavior of Korganizer to this point.

Feature allows a better view of events that occur at the end or beginning of each month, or to always display the current week at the top of the calendar to see what events occur in the next 4 weeks in the calendar view. As opposed to switching to the Summary view.

This feature would be similar to Muiltweek in Thunderbird's Lightning Extension.

I would very much like to have this feature back, it used to be present in 4.7 (I think, before the big kontact revamp a while back), and was very handy; this might mean this should be a bug (since it can be viewed as a regression) rather a wish? Either way, it would be very useful to have this functionality again.

Confirmed in Kontact 4.14.10 (as in OpenSUSE Leap 42.1).

Note that May and June 2016 fit into 5 weeks and therefore the problem is currently not as bad but during the second half of July, we'll be suffering again.

The bug is still present in Kontact 5.7.3 and has now been present for more than five years now!

Is Kontact still actively developed?
Comment 8 Joachim Wagner 2018-04-25 08:22:37 UTC
Kontact is a container. The relevant project is KOrganizer and https://cgit.kde.org/korganizer.git/log/ shows some activity. It seems that the developers rate this feature request just high enough to not close it with "won't fix".

I'm sure a patch from the community will be appreciated.

It's in the nature of the application that the users who suffer the most from this missing feature do not have the time to implement it.

Workaround: Use the agenda view, select 2-3 weeks and drag the separator as far left as possible.

Reading my old comment #5 an alternative to implementing smooth scrolling would be to allow the user to change the number of displayed weeks. If 8 weeks were shown I could now see all the way to the 20th of May, instead of just to the 6th of May.
