Description m.wege 2012-08-09 22:14:19 UTC
Timeline showing the files from last month currently shows the files from the last month in the sense of July (now is August). I would expect this function to show the files from the last 31 days instead. This is a wish to change it, I believe it makes much more sense.

Reproducible: Always

Please report any future timeline issues as Nepomuk bugs. I think that there is no product/component for timeline, but this makes sure that Sebastian Trüg gets the reports (and that I don't have to reassign all reports manually). Thanks.

I just opened up a 'timeline' component. I'm reassigning it to that component.

PS: There are other developers as well :D

Has there been any thoughts on this. Does my argument sound reasonable?

I'm not too sure if "Last Month" should mean the last 31 days. From my point of view, it's quite clear that "Last Month" means the previous month, and not the last 31 days.

I'll ask some other developers for their opinion.

I would find it consistent to have
- Today - Meaning this day
- Yesterday - The day before
- Lastweek - Last week with the last seven days
- Lastmonth - Last month meaning the last 31 days.
Why?
First of all I would say more than four options in Dolphins sidebar is too much
- When I am looking for documents I would say things which I have done today or yesterday are something I can exactly remember which day I have done them.
- When I am not so sure, but it was closed by, it makes sense to define last week as the last seven days, otherwise some days in this search paradigm might be missing (depending on the day of the week you search).
- The same goes for last month. From the 8th of every month it would be required to have a thismonth. But this would mean a fifth option which would say would be too much for just quick click list in the side bar. I believe going back 31 days is enough this way, if one needs more one can start an extended search. Of course the naming is something not so perfect, but in German things which happened "within the last month" can mean the last 31 days.

A natural month are 30 days and not 31.

Probably this is a translation problem but, at least for me:
last 30 days: last 30 days
this month: this month (even if today is 1)
last month: this month less 1
last 7 days: last 7 days
this week: current week (even if today is Monday (Sunday in some countries))
last week: this week less 1
etc...

I second m.wege's approach here, although I also see a little wording problem.

However the use-case to me is, e.g. looking for a recent file:
- today, not here ->
- yesterday (bigger list), still not here ->
- last week (even bigger list), still not here ->
- last month (even bigger list), ah here is it. :-)

So the actual / concrete day/week/month is NOT of interest.

A *different* use-case would be:
At the end of the year, one is reminiscing about the passing year and is going through his timeline to see which files he edited in which month/week/day.

However this is IMHO not an every day task and also one wouldn't do this in dolphin, but in an app like Gnome Journal or similar...

I have an idea how to show this in Dolphin.
Recently accessed files
then a slider (either in the sidebar or in the file area itself)
starting point of the slider is today, then yesterday, last week (meaning seven days), last month.
Depending on where the slider is show this would even allow either last 2 , three and more month or a field [custom], where a user could input a custom value.

Yes, this is a nice idea. Although I think it shouldn't be placed in the places bar, as this would IMHO overload the default UI of dolphin. But in a dedicated view (like the search view) it would be very reasonable.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

The Nepomuk project is no longer included in the KDE Software Compilation. With Plasma 5, we have replaced most of the underlying technology with Baloo and other components. Hopefully this will have addressed your concern.

We encourage you to try to Plasma 5 (+Baloo) and let us know if your problem persists.

Re-opening since the issue persists in Baloo.

Dolphin in Neon has

    Recent Files
    Recent Locations

Whereas in Fedora it has

    Recent Files
    Recent Locations
    Modified Today
    Modified Yesterday

The latter two invoking timeline:/today/ and timeline with a link to yesterday's date.

I think there is a useful case for setting up a link to

    timeline:/calendar/

to let you step back and forth through dates. In this guise, it's clear that it not providing "last week" or "last month" functionality.

I'd say, flag as "Resolved". Or maybe "Superceded"...
