Description Francesco 2012-07-29 11:43:27 UTC
I have expirienced on KDE 4.7x and 4.8.x some problem with basic desktop effects....

logout effect when desktop compositing is off shows a black screen and freeze the "countdown box" for a few seconds

logout effect when desktop compositing is on doesn't fading to to grey the desktop

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Select shutdown (or restart or logout) from the kickoff menu
2.
3.
Actual Results:
the desktop doesn't fading to to grey

Expected Results:
the desktop must be fading to to grey

I also have looked this:

When in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf I add the line
     Option "Composite" "false"
in the section "Extensions"
the desktop effects are not available (on KDE version 4.6.x, and lower, were unusable but available) and his options substituted by a message
"Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available"

So you thought it would be a good idea to report that right after 4.9 is fixed as well?
Please report bugs when you spot them asap.
Ensure your version is not totally outdated and the report them.
This holds for everything, not only KDE/KWin

> logout effect when desktop compositing is off shows a black screen and freeze the "countdown box" for a few seconds
This is not kwin effects related. A screenshot of your desktop is taken, put into a giant window below the dialog and animated.

So what? That's the sole point about that setting.

> on KDE version 4.6.x, and lower, were unusable but available
No. Whatever you think to recall, that's simply not possible.

Thanks for the explanation.

Unfortunately the Debian testing branch is freezed at KDE 4.8.4 and I will not have the availability to test a version 4.9 for a long time. This fix can be backported to KDE 4.8.5 ?

No, sorry.

As Thomas pointed out it's too late for 4.8.5 (better said: I decided I don't want to have the fix in 4.8), but you can ask the Debian maintainers to backport the commit to their packages. AFAIK they are not opposed to do that before the release.
