If an XMP sidecar file already exists alongside a photo, digikam will not read it, even if the file was written by (another instance of) digikam itself. It also cannot be forced to read it via a menu option. This arises in the use case where photos are stored in a Dropbox account: photo metadata saved to an XMP file on one machine, then synced to another machine. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Set digikam on computer A to write metadata to XMP sidecar file 2. Edit photo metadata. 3. Copy photo and XMP file to computer B. 4. Open photo on computer B. Actual Results: Metadata entered on computer A is not visible. Expected Results: Digikam should show the metadata from the XMP file.
First, update at least to 2.6.0 release where XMP sidecar have been very improved. In second, go to the bottom of Captions/Tags tab from right sidebar. there is an option to force to re-read metadata from file... Gilles Caulier

In 5.9 rereading metadata form sidecar file works correctly. It reads metadata from darktable for example. I use Item → Reread metadata from image.
