On Windows 7, 64bit, used the 2.7 *.exe installer. All is fine if there are no external/USB drives mounted. If there is, then splash screen starts and then application dies and goes away.
I can confirm this bug. I am also using 2.7.0 on Windows 7 64bit. Iirc it crashed immediately after the splash screen said "Initializing main view". No crash report dialog appeared, unlike another bug I hit.
digiKam 2.5 works fine. The bug appears in 2.6 and 2.7. Really annoying bug. showfoto still works in the new versions.
This has been fixed with 2.8.0 and 2.9.0 simultaneously released today for completeness. The issue was with KDE SC and was fixed somewhere between KDE SC 4.8.3 and 4.8.5. Sorry for the hassle! You can download digiKam 2.9.0 for Windows from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/digikam/files/digikam/2.9.0/digiKam-installer-2.9.0-win32.exe/download

Please download installer again which now contains correct glib component. Sorry for any hassle this might have caused!
