- What I was doing when the application crashed:

I was getting many, many popups about duplicate messages for emails which were several weeks old. Possibly these were for ignored threads; always the left-hand choice was blank except for an IGNORED flag. (The popup window is so small that so see messages properly you have to expand the window. I only bothered to do this once.) After getting so many popups I decided to re-start Kontact, so clicked on the Close button. At this point Kontact crashed.
