Description mathew 2012-06-29 14:47:05 UTC
I took a look at KAddressBook today, wondering if it would sync to my Android address book, maybe via Gmail.

When I opened the configuration, the first entry was Contact Actions. I noticed that the action drop-downs for "Dial Phone Number" and "Send SMS" had built-in support for Microsoft Skype -- and nothing else!

It is utterly shameful for a piece of free software to promote a closed, proprietary network and its encrypted binaries in this way. Either some entries for common open standards solutions should be added, or the Skype entry should be removed. (Or ideally, both of those things!)

Reproducible: Always

skype is a logiciel on linux too.
So it's invalid your wishlist.
I will not remove it.

Laurent,

I think this bug is more about promoting software from a commercial company as Skype is owned by Microsoft now.

Ideally, I think we leave Skype but add support for other options like Android and GMail.

Maybe we could change this bug into a wish for supporting Android and GMail addressbooks? We must already have wishes for those, I can't believe we don't.

Yes, you can send SMS with Gmail: http://support.google.com/chat/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=106015

As Allen Winter pointed out, you completely missed the point. It's not that Skype is promoted; it's that Skype is promoted *to the exclusion of all open source and free software solutions*. You know, like QuteCom (which can send SMS and make calls), Ekiga, Empathy, Jitsi, ...

And there is api for it ?
