Description Janek Bevendorff 2012-06-16 12:48:06 UTC
The settings window for the clock plasmoid (digital/analog) is too small by default (see screen shot).
A vertical scroll bar of just a few pixels bar appears in the left column, which is pretty useless and ugly and the calendar settings can't be used at all without scaling the window up first.

Reproducible: Always

Expected Results:
The window should have a bigger default size so that the left pane doesn't get a vertical scroll bar and the Calendar settings don't need to be scrolled horizontally.

Confirming.
Digital Clock Settings are way too small by default...

For which exact KDE version? A confirmation is useless without the exact version.
Comment 4 Janek Bevendorff 2012-09-10 11:36:13 UTC
All versions I guess. I would have closed that bug otherwise.
But yes, if someone writes confirmation messages, he should also point
out the version number.

My bad...
Confirming on Fedora 17 / KDE 4.8.5: Digital Clock Settings are way too small by default...

While this is still an issue in KDE 4.9.1, i don't think it can be solved easily. As you can see in the settings of the clock, it's just one of those tabs. The entire settings popup can be made wider and that will fix the issue, but that will also uglify all other pages since it feels too wide then for those pages..

If someone else could give his/her input on this?
Comment 7 Janek Bevendorff 2012-09-20 21:45:37 UTC
Increasing the size of the whole dialog would be THE solution. Changing
the size depending on which tab is selected is not a good idea as it
would produce a very jumpy interface.

Also an overall bigger dialog wouldn't be ugly at all. The window is
generally too small (just look at the tabs on the left, they have a
very superfluous scroll bar). The calendar settings tab is just the one
tab where it is most obvious.

Even worse in German.
The first column is correctly auto-resized...

... the second column is too small, and still they're altogether way to large for the window.

Snapshot: Time zones tab in German

Timezones don't scroll horizontally, but the columns are too small, at least for the translated text.
Comment 11 Janek Bevendorff 2012-12-08 19:59:56 UTC
With an English locale the timezone column is too small as well.
The window has to be made bigger, horizontally as well as vertically.
The vertical tabbar on the left currently has a scroll bar with a scope
of about 20px which is purely ugly.

Making the window bigger wouldn't uglify the rest, IMHO. Big parts of
the UI would profit from it: the vertical tabbar, the Calendar Tab and
the TimeZones tab.
The Share Tab wouldn't look any uglier or prettier, nor would the
"Keyboard Shortcut" tab. The only two tabs which might get a little too
much space are the "Appearance" and the "General" tab, but not so much
that the UI falls apart. They still look decent.

The window doesn't have to be huge, it just should be large enough so
that neither the tabs on the left have to be scrolled vertically, nor
the Calendar Tree View horizontally.

<_< apparently this is a bug that would be nice to get fixed.

Right, i tried searching for the place where the width is defined, but i can't find any place that contains the text "Digital Clock Settings" (the title of the clock settings window). If someone can point me to that file then i will try to fix it.

I already searched through:
http://quickgit.kde.org/?p=kde-workspace.git&a=tree&h=36cbc35ee7ec4dd0238f600fa936794163ed390c&hb=1fe179257eb8a6c419800c5bb17faa15cd3cbd1f&f=plasma%2Fgeneric%2Fapplets%2Fdigital-clock

... it doesn't seem to be in any of the obvious places. Or i just keep overlooking it.

The UI is totally different in Plasma 5 and does not suffer from this issue.
