Description sombragris 2012-05-30 12:11:47 UTC
If one chooses not to use KWallet and input the POP mail account passwords before checking mail, one is presented wih an authentication dialog asking for a POP password.

The problem is that if one happens to enter a wrong password, there is absolutely no indication that the POP login failed. KMail behaves as if there is no new mail, and that's it.

This behavior is misleading to users. An user may think he has no mail when what really happened was that he entered a wrong password.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Disable KWallet on the system. Launch KMail.
2. Check your POP mail account.
3. Enter a wrong password.
Actual Results:
Nothing.

Expected Results:
Feedback - perhaps a message telling us: "The login failed. Reason: Wrong user/password combination. Check your credentials and try again / ok / cancel"

Thanks for all the hard work :)

Comment 2 sombragris 2012-06-10 19:50:28 UTC
Thank you! however, I see this behavior in 4.9 beta 1. Is it fixed after this release?
Comment 3 Laurent Montel 2012-06-11 10:02:42 UTC
after beta1
beta2
Comment 4 sombragris 2012-06-14 12:25:37 UTC
Thanks :)
I'm still seeing this behavior in beta2. Can you reconsider the FIXED status, please?
Comment 5 Laurent Montel 2012-06-14 14:13:05 UTC
Do you activate notification in kmail ?
otherwise you will not see them.
Comment 6 sombragris 2012-06-14 14:36:25 UTC
Yes, it is enabled. In Notifications, under the "Kmail" category, I have enabled a popup for "Error While Checking Mail".
Comment 7 Laurent Montel 2012-06-14 15:54:34 UTC
no it's "akonadi sent error message"
Comment 8 sombragris 2012-06-15 00:59:54 UTC
There is no such item in notifications. Neither from Settings > Configure Notifications in KMail, or in the Notifications applet in system settings.
Comment 9 Laurent Montel 2012-06-15 06:22:11 UTC
so you don't have last kdepim.
Perhaps beta2 was tagged before it.
Wait next release

Question: Why in the *world* are errors not reported by default?! I lost a substantial amount of time setting up Kmail trying to figure out why it seemed to think there were no new messages. Please explain to me how it makes any sense at all to not, by default, tell the user *anything* if something goes wrong.
