Kubuntu 12.04, KDE 4.8.3 (the same with 4.8.2), Pentium IV 3GHz HT, 1,5GB RAM, 7300GT + Forceware 295.40, animations set to "slow", for a smoother feel. I'm activating Grid + Present with upper right screen corner. The issue might have something to do with my hardware possibly being slightly to slow for even a deeply optimized Kwin (or rather Kwin still being not as light and lightning-fast as Compiz), resulting in significant framerate drops upon using some effect, including this one. Reproducible: Sometimes
As I understand your issue is related to Desktop Grid and not performance. In that case don't mention it as it has nothing to do with the actual bug report and only serves as a way to annoy me. Can you provide detailed steps on how to reproduce the issue?
It's pretty much random, and thus not easily reproducable. The closest thing would be setting animations to "slow", switching to Plasma Desktop with Search and Launch (not a "page"), which I use, placing two windows on the first desktop and simply switching to the second (top right). The remaining "Desktop Grid" settings are as follows: - Zoom duration: 350 milliseconds; - Border width: 3 pixels - Desktop name alignment: Center - Layout mode: Automatic - Use Present Windows effect to layout the windows: Enabled
- Do you use "one activity per virtual desktop" or however this setting is named? - Does the change invoke a mouseclick from your side? (like you'd accidentally drag a window) - "switching to Plasma Desktop with Search and Launch (not a "page"), which I use, placing two windows on the first desktop and simply switching to the second (top right)." -> Does this read "i use krunner to switch desktops when this happens"? Otherwise: How do you invoke the desktop grid - shortcut or screen corner?
I trigger the Grid with upper right screen corner, and then choose a desktop with a mouse click. I don't use the "one activity per virtual desktop" (or rather "Different widgets for each desktop") and i can't even activate it (it's grayed out).
I have just noticed, that upon switching to the desktop no. 2 (top right) has literally grabbed a single window from desktop no. 1 (top left). It looked as it this window (KDE preferences) stayed in it's position for too long, and thus fell into the area of the desktop 2 being zoomed. Now I also remember that sometimes, when I click on desktop 2 to pick it, the only reaction is the "Search and Launch" on desktop 1 being zoomed to fill the whole desktop and cover the remaining windows in "Present" mode, and then instantly returning to its previous position. In this case, desktop 2 is selected only after I click it again.
are you clicking before the animations have finished?
No. One more thing, I've just recalled: Sometimes, when I click in the "Grid" mode, "Search and Launch" gets and stays attached to the mouse cursor, as if I was dragging it, even though I'm not holding any button at this very moment. Clicking again releases it.
just to make sure: "search and launch" (ie. the palsma netbook thing) seems to be an important part - if not the important part. do you only use it or plasma-netbook altogether (ie. how did you invoke this - just replaced the shell by "fixing" the service files by hand or clicked "netbook mode" in the config? have you ever been able to trigger it w/o plasma-netbook? (try "kquitapp plasma-netbook; sleep 3; plasma-desktop")
I'm using only Plasma Netbook, since I find it more convenient than Desktop, and seemingly faster as well. I activated it by switching in System settings > Workspace behavior > Workspace. The case with "Search and Launch" might be that it's not a "true" desktop, but rather an application "floating" over it, and behaving like any other window while in the "Grid" mode.
Hi. Is this still an issue and if yes, > One more thing, I've just recalled: Sometimes, when I click in the "Grid" mode, "Search > and Launch" gets and stays attached to the mouse cursor, as if I was dragging it, even > though I'm not holding any button at this very moment. Clicking again releases it. can you please try running "kquitapp plasma-netbook; sleep 3; plasma-netbook --style plastique" and check whether it's still reproducible? Also smells possibly related to bug #289747 (while on apparently different conditions)
I'm sorry I can no longer help with my own bug, but I've just migrated to Unity and I had switched from Plasma Netbook to Desktop several weeks earlier. I just hope I haven't completely wasted your time.
