Description David Weenink 2012-05-04 07:43:40 UTC
Installing the network manager applet (instead of the gnome nm-applet) freezes the taskbar during long times and makes it unresponsive. This happens now on kubuntu 12.04 (kde 4.8.2) as well as months ago on 11.10 (kde 4.8.1&4.8.0).
Login in and out again does not help, eventually the task bar will freeze again. By moving the mouse to the left top screen edge (presenting all windows) I can switch applications. Then, strange enough, I can still use Firefox and kdevelop but sometimes kmail refuses to accept tekst from the keyboard.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. remove startup of nm-applet
2. logout
3. login
4. add network management applet
5. after some time the taskbar freezes
Actual Results:
freeze

Expected Results:
obvious

Which Plasma NM version do you use? You can see the version in Manage Connection -> Other. If you use something below 0.9.0 (this is the Plasma NM version, not NetworkManager's) then you have to upgrade.

More information about desktop freezes here:

I'm using version 0.9.0.1 of Plasma NM
(kde 4.8.2)
Greetings,

David

I really do not know what could be causing this. I do not have any freezings in my desktop that could be related to Plasma NM. What plasmoids do you have running?
Comment 4 David Weenink 2012-05-07 07:51:57 UTC
Dear Lamarque,

The plamoids I use in the system tray:
Dictionary, Power settings, System Load Viewer, Kmix, Bluetooth, Keyboard
settings, System Notification, Klipper, Kalarm, Ktorrent, Kontact, Amarok,
Pager, and the additional ones (see attached pdf with screenshot).

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that sleeping mode does not really
work on my laptop? After a reboot the sleep mode works once but then after
waking up the next time I activate sleep, sleep mode will shut off the desktop
but will show a blinking cursor at the top left and then refuses to go to
sleep. This process is repeatable, and this behaviour started some half year
ago (I use Intel core duo T9300@2.5GHz and Nvidia Geforce 8600M graphics).
My system is uptodate Kubuntu 12.04.)

Greetings,

David

You have many plamoids, maybe one of them is causing the problem. This comment https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=287002#c99 mentions that kmixd can cause freezes on the desktop. You should try removing some of those plasmoid one by one until the problem disappears. If you can identify the plasmoid that is really causing the problem we can fix it here if the plasmoid source code is in the KDE's git repository.

When sleep does not work properly it can left the hardware in unusable state, usualy when that happen the hardware does not work at all until you reboot the system (sometimes you also need to unplug the power, wait some seconds, plug the power and turn the device on). I do not think that is the case here.

I haven't yet experimented in removing various plasmoids, but I find that the network manager causes the plasma desktop to freeze (reproducible some of the time) when it is associating with wireless networks, especially when it validates the network password.

Because I auto-hide my panel this is particularly troublesome. I can still switch windows, but I cannot get to the launcher or other plasmoids. I use the physical switch on my wireless card to power on and off -- or wait several minutes -- to resolve the problem.

I am running NM 0.9.0.1 and Kubuntu 12.04. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

I have this issue too (NM 0.9.0.3, KDE 4.8.4). In my case freezes are clearly associated with ktorrent activity, i.e. with wifi activity. When I start few traffic consuming downloads in ktorrent panel freezes almost instantly (in approximately 10-20 sec), when I temporarely pause downloads, panel becomes responsive again (in the same 10-20 sec).
And yeah, updates notifier is switched off.
Comment 8 Lamarque V. Souza 2012-07-23 02:03:49 UTC
It looks like there is a problem in the kded4 process running in your session. The password dialog run in kded4 process, so any problem in kded4 can cause your problem and probably it is not Plasma NM that is causing it, Plasma NM is just being effected by it, like ktorrent is.

I have looked at bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=297671 and ktorrent uses synchronous calls to talk to kded4, which is a problem that Plasma NM used to have until I fixed it some months ago: http://lamarque-lvs.blogspot.com/2012/03/desktop-freezes-in-48x.html

Maybe removing ktorrent solves the problem, but I think there is something else effecting kded4. If removing ktorrent solves this problem then I will mark this bug as dupolicate of #297671.
Comment 9 mayhoob 2012-07-23 05:52:33 UTC
KTorrent does *not* freeze itself, only plasma does. In fact all the programs work perfectly well, I even can start them using shortcuts. So as far as I can see this is not bug 297671. Not exactly anyway.
I'll try to reproduce this with other network activities.
Comment 10 Nicolaas van der Merwe 2012-08-26 02:20:55 UTC
I am experiencing similar freeze behavior as described here. It seems to sometimes be related to network activity. Also, when I close my laptop and it sleeps/hibernates the panel will be frozen. All applications will still be running fine (the same as the freeze behavior described above) but the KDE panel will be completely unresponsive.

I am running KDE 4.8.4 on Ubuntu 12.04 with fully up to date packages and an Acer Aspire 4750G notebook (NVidia GForce GT 540M/Intel 3000 Sandybridge graphics cards).

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

I'm experiencing this same problem on a regular basis. I noticed the Task Manager will completely freeze (sometimes up to 30 seconds) before becoming (temporarily) available again, when I reach the limit of the upload speed of my internet connection or when the connection is slow (I live in a remote area and the connection can be anything from very fast to quite slow here).

So it seems to me this is a some sort of upload buffer problem. Maybe some part of KDE is trying to send out some signal that can't get through sometimes or waiting for a timeout?

I'm using a wireless connection and am running KDE 4.9.5 on Mint 14

New user! Really happy with KDE!
Comment 13 Lamarque V. Souza 2013-07-05 16:25:29 UTC
Is this still happening?
Comment 14 David Weenink 2013-07-05 19:30:22 UTC
No it doesn't happen anymor since a long time.. I use kubuntu 4.10.5 now and all is well.
Thank you.

david

I have also not experienced this bug in some time using the latest packages in Arch Linux.
Comment 16 Christoph Feck 2013-07-11 22:17:12 UTC
Thanks for the updates, marking as resolved.

If you can still reproduce on a recent version (KDE 4.10.5 or 4.11), please add a comment.
